How do you determine shim thickness required when fitting a locker?

My ex sold her hard top for scrap the other day! I almost had welded diffs!
But alas, I don't have any spares. So auto it is

are you talking about the shimming of the pinion?

i have NO idea. Someone said get it shimmed to get the right tolerances.
Thats why i wanna know how i figure out how to determine the right size shims.

hmmmm. i have heard of getting a lsd shimmed but not a diff lock. but never the less i assume they would have shimms inside them. but if its brand new i doubt highly that you will have to do anything apart from bolt it in your centre housing. apart from set bearing pre load. backlash. and pinion depth.

there are specs/clearances the side gears/or couplers are supposed to have between the locker center and the housing.

really boys if you dont understand the question maybe you shouldn't answer.

the clearances are in the lockrite paperwork.

Ive never worrried about adjusting them as it was always close in my diffs and mines not used on road

You won't need to worry about shims with your locker, if your still going to use a Spartan. If you try to put anything more than what came in the box into your carrier, things won't line up properly. You can get someone to set your backlash if you want, I didn't and ice never had an issue with mine

i got a spartan. It just says chuck it in! also uses the side gears no couplers

Yep, no couplers in the Spartan. I found these instructions way more helpful than the ones from lowrange

Ahhh. Fuck yeah. Doing it this weekend then, got a dial indicator so ill set the backlash.

Even though you re-use your side gears, it will still be worthwhile to check the shim clearance for the auto-locker to work to it's best. A loose autolocker will have "issues", whereas a tight will be more bearable to live with. It's easy to check, Scroll down to page 7.

We covered this once before and I posted a reply for the Genuine part numbers for the different thickness shims, but I can't seem to find that thread??

If you follow thier instructions you shouldn't have to touch the back lash. I checked mine before and after I installed the locker and nothing changed.

When I put my locker in, as I pulled the diff apart I punch marked EVERYTHING, that way when I put it back together it was just a matter of lining up the punch marks. That way everything went back together exactly the same as it came apart

What sort of gasket sealant stuff do I use when attaching the center back to the housing?

Also, might do my front diff oil while I'm at it. Can LSD oil be used in an open diff? Just saves buying two lots of oil.

You won't need LSD oil for the auto locker. Just run Hypoid oil front and rear. Unless you have a LSD in the front?

I use Penrite Hypoid 80w90 in my diffs. 1 with minispool, 1 with lockrite.
I use Permatex Ultra Grey gasket goo for refitting the centre. It has the highest resistance to oils. Any of the ultra range (blue/black/red) will more than do the job though.

Hypoid.. Is that a type of oil or a the name of a Penrite oil?
Cool, I thought the grey would be sweet just wasn't sure if there was anything better I should use.

I used permatex blue sealant and 80w 90 oil for the diff, you don't need LSD oil

Hypoid is just a type of oil.. Not all gearbox oil is hypoid oil.. I use an LSD oil with my autolocker and standard repco 80/90 5liter bottles for eveything else.. Red gasket on everything, but the other shit will work.
