why is it that zooks hate ther carbys.

so as anyone who has read my build (procrastination) thread will know. have have a new electric choke webber on my sierra. and it runs like crap, have terible fuel constumnption (4km to the litre on the highway) and have no power what so ever. it struggles to do 95 down hill (i didnt think sierras were that bad.)

anyways i pulled the top airfilter adaptor of the webber and from what i can tell the second barrel is not doing anything (butterfly thingo at the bottom dosent open at all under any throddle or just idle) it also takes about 15 mins for the choke to turn off. and there is a open vacum pipe (i think its a vacum pipe) with no hose on it (picture below)

Image

any help would be greatly apreciated
cheers troy

only thing i can help with, is that the secondaries are vacuum controlled, it won't open unless the engine is revving and needs it, but these can play up too and stick shut.

Webers are manuel secondarys, meaning, it is by your foot that opens the second butterfly.

IF its not opening there is a mechanical problem.

Regarding fuel consumption, that is not bad if its when you are WOT, and fanging like all get out. Id say, the jets are all wrong, pull them, tell us what you have, I will do the same, coz mine seriously flys.

Did you open the inlet manifold to suit the much larger throats of the weber, or is it still for the very restrictive aisin/stock carby.

As far as I know, all webers are mechanical secondary.

I have been known to be wrong tho.

I have a weber, and its on 31s with standard gearing, 1l. It flys, I can pull a 2t trailer at 80 in top, up and down hills, not recommended tho, as that is really illegal. The only reason I didn't go faster was that it was getting really wobbly.

The weber is a fantastic power upgrade, tho it does not like extreme angles, for less than extreme, stunning, for extreme, useless.

i am reading through the instruction book for it atm. qoute " calibrations may vary due to regional fuels and state of engine tune and performance. poor running does not always mean a bad or poorly adjusted carburetor. AN ADVANTAGE OF THE WEBBER CARBURETOR IS ITS EASE OF ADJUSTMENT AND TUNNING"

i rebuilt the carby of my 1982 honda xr 80 when i was 8. im 16 now (yes i know old right) and i cant even work out whitch vacum pipe is witch.

hate to break it to ya webber this thing aint easy to tune.

The first pic is pretty hard to work out, but, where is it.

If you start the motor, is it sucking air, if so, when you hold the throttle open, does the "suck", vacuum get less. Do you have a vacuum advance line to your dizzy, if so, where is it attached to the carby.

Sorry, webers are basically a hole, with some little squirty things in it, so fuking simple, even blind freddy can see whats up.

Jets play a huge part, so too does any air leak.

First pic seems to be just a float breather (should be able to blow through it freely)

All 32/36 webers have mechanical secondaries, no vacuum pots to worry about. Don't blame the carb if the rest of your engine is off (timing, shit fuel etc)

Its a simple carb and easy to setup! Check to see what jets are in it.

With the following jet setup on a 1.3 with extractors and a 2inch exhaust:

primary/secondary

mains: 140/135
air correctors: 170/180
Idle: 60/55

I got a very stable AFR of 13:1 across the rev range and returned 11k's/L on the highway

The outlet that is unhooked is a vent it should stay unhooked.

The secondaries should open at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, without the engine running (mechanical). Try running the linkage by hand, it is possible your cable is too loose, or the bolt under the throttle pedal is not giving you WOT.

The jetting provided above is a good start. with a fresh motor you may be able to go lower on the idles. say a 55.

Timing is crucial, and so is vacuum advance. Suck on the advance hose, then put your tongue over it. If it bleeds down, then your diaphragm needs to be replaced.

Also replace your PCV valve, they are like $3.50 and will cause a major headache if bad. They only last about 3k miles.

The best thing you could ever do is set lean best idle, then adjust timing. This will give you some powe,r and help determine if your jetting is right.

http://www.carburetion.com/weber/adjust.htm

By the way, that adapter that lets you hook up the stock carb hood/lid is restrictive as. You get no air at all through that little adapter piece. You will gain noticeable improvement be finding a different way to hook up an air filter. They seriously suck that bad.

If you hear ANY pinging at all, adjust it out right away. Suzuki 1.3's run very well on the dangerous side of lean, and make good power there, but like to burn valves when run that way. Speaking of valves, adjust your rockers too.

All of this adds up and makes a big difference. When jetted and tuned properly the weber makes good power, but they will always be shit off road.

I hope that helps
