You guys get different carbs than is. Ours was two fold. Our government required a computer that could tell you when the emissions systems were malfunctioning. Since the manufacturers had to add a computer, they used it to cotrol fuel mixture to gain mileage and performance as well.

As for your carbs, i would say probably performance and AU emissions too.

Skyman - you're not really helping the OP. Sierras in Australia NEVER had oxygen sensors and the emissions control system is completely different.

SuziBlu - The little black emissions control box was introduced with the WT that's why your cars don't have one.

SSSierra - As has been posted, the emissions control system in your car really only effects EGR at cruise. It's no "costing" you any power. None. Not a bit. Leave it alone.

DropBear8 - The first year for emissions control in Australia for passenger cars was 1973 or 1974 IIRC. At that point they were pretty basic. for commercial vehicles, their introduction was later and they lagged passenger cars in terms of complexity. Obviously, the biggest recent change was the introduction of ULP in 1985, and that's when lots of cars, (like the 308) lost masses of power. As much as anything though, this was due to a loss of octane that accompanied the introduction of ULP, and limited development money available to spend on the 308 - remember that at the same time Holden switched to the RB30 because they didn't have the money to develop their own ULP engine.

I've had some interesting discussions with people about emissions and "lost power" over the years.

It's true that in during the 70's and 80's, bolting emissions controls onto engines designed to run without them cost power, and in some cases removing them would improve power, these days, it's impossible to separate tuning from emissions control - the engines are designed to control emissions - they don't have "bolt on" solutions - with the possible exception of Nox scrubbers.

Have a look at the power and torque outputs, and fuel economy figures of modern, mass produced engines - we are generating more HP per litre using less fuel than ever before.

While your carbs may never have had O2 sensors, the OP clearly stated his emissions system did so I assumed, my bad.

When the op started the thread he neglected to point out that he was running a weber, that kinda makes the entire "help remove my emissions" post moot, wouldn't ya say? While the EGR can still be functional with a weber, there is no need for it, and it is more of liability if it fails.

Not to mention the OP kind of has a hard time keeping his post specific to his original question as well. I really don't think he expected the thread to stay on topic after posting about high school kids with 9 second cars

The thread then digressed into a few interesting discussions, some relating to the OP, some not.

While my posts may not have been directly specific to your exact carb , they do explain general emissions theory, and how sierra emissions work with the exception of an 02 sensor and mixture enhancement.

On a side note this thread was a foot in the door for a couple of AZ members who will be picking up inexpensive TBI injection for their 8 valves.
