Had an idea for my fuel tank and just wondering if any has done it on a road registered car. Considering chopping out the rear floor and putting the tank above the chassis. I know i can put it in the back as long as it is vented properly and the breather line does 2 loops just not sure about cutting the floor? All input appreciated. Thanks

It would probably result in a "structural defect" if the policeman was having a bad day, although there's no reason for that to be an issue as the car has a separate chassis.

I'd cover it with a false floor, then it wouldn't be obvious.

PS sierra fuel tanks are a terrible candidate for doing this with as the mounting flange isn't horizontal. If you are keen to go through with this use a vitara tank - a much better fit.

Is there any other ways of lifting the tank so it's not constantly hitting the ground when hard 4wding. If anyone has pics of lifted, moved or other tank options please post.

No. If you have a look under your zook you will see that the only way is up. And that requires you to chop the floor.

Technically I could go up 2 inch cause of body lift but this would put the filler pipe half way in the chassis. Solution?

Gotta go higher. Like I said, chop the floor.

Alternatively you could modify the tank but that would be a PITA also.

I could just make some brackets and put in tray where rear seats were.

Yep. False floor has bee suggested.

Just remember that you will need a mod plae for the seating modification ( removal of seats) and for the fuel system alteration (relocating fuel tank). But with a properly made false floor you should have no issues with legality.

So do I need to make a false floor? Cause I was talking to Chris hollingsworth and he reckons as long as I have it vented and 2 loops in the breather and fill from the outside, he could mod plate it is this correct? If I was going to do a false floor would I be better to just chop into a ute then I could put it above chassis?

If he is happy to plate it that way then thats between you guys.

Personally I would only be lifting it high enough so that the filler misses the chassis, by cutting the floor. And I personally would much prefer that a false floor be fitted to prevent cargo from rupturing the tank, and to keep fuel vapours out of the cabin, but I guess I am just be anal about it.

nd WTF would you do a ute chop to lift a stupid 40L tank? Just fit a bash guard and save yourself alot of time and money....

The only thing that will help you is bigger tyres. The tank is higher than the diffs. If you are getting stuck on the tank you will be very stuck on your diffs.

it was manly stuck when front wheels were going up a ledge and the tank was pivoting over the back axle. other than that i want the tow bar higher and custom rear bar that's why the tank move. got 30's on there now would go 32 but no money for 6.5 tc gears

Are you able to cut the floor and move it up a little, then just weld a box over the part that's protruding into the cab? Or do you need an entire false floor?

if you want to do this mod USE A VITARA TANK - It's much easier to mount as it has a flat mounting flange and the filler is already higher so it's much easier to fit over the chassis rail.

Here's some photos of vitara tanks in the back of sierras. These aren't though the floor of a car with a body lift, but do sit higher than a sierra tank.

Obviously, if you were willing to go through the floor, you could mount the tank on top of the crossmember which would make it very high and easy to protect, like the photos of the tank in my Trayback. The green/brown one)

Lastly, here's a LWB Vitara tank set though the floor as you are describing. Tanks take up a lot of room when set through the floor and it is hard to prevent fumes.

We have another car in the club with a vitara tank in the same spot. It works, but it does make the car very impractical.

Meanwhile, some of those pics show some bloody good fabwork Gwagensteve!

Is the zook the pictures are of road registered/registerable? Just wondering because some of that stuff looks done specifically to make it ridiculously wheelable!

THe car with the black chassis is engineered and legal.

The Green SWB was never certed and has been parted out.

My green Junk (Hedgepig) isn't certed, but there's nothing about the back of it that couldn't be.

The grey car (the trolley tug) was built the same as the black car, so there's no problem there. It hasn't been certed either

Obviously, the tyres we choose to run are not legal.

Decent fab work is no problem to approve. The big problem is tyre size.

Correct - Carby Vitara is the go.... unless you want to swap to EFI later, then fit an EFI tank and delete the fuel pump for now.

PS X-90 tanks are the same as EFI SWB vitara.

Hehehe - It's funny how wrong they look in that photo - they aren't notched as much as they look.

They are 25X50X3mm C channel with notches to clear the anti inversion widgets on the WT chassis. We didn't want to remove the anti inversion plates altogether as with the length of the N76 shocks, the shocks aren't acting as a travel limiter to prevent the shackles inverting.

They are gusseted and have been on the car for years with no problem.
