I made a new bracket to accommodate the new poly blocks which are copies of the above aluminium block. If the poly blocks fail i'll put the aluminium block in. Bruce has copied the block and we are going to test the poly out with plasma rope. You can't use these for steel cable.

The poly block has rear and side support, so it's not relying on the structure too much, but mainly uses the poly surface.

I'll be keen to know how this works out as I need a solution for when I put the winch under the tray.

Grave dig :helloo:

Hey Steve, how did this rear winch setup turn out? Ya reckon it would work with a SWB with a full body? eg, not chopped into a ute.

oooo gees an old one,

Damo, it worked out well, i have had it the same since this and used it quite a few times. The Poly block didn't work though, the rope ate away at it, i use the original aluminium one and it's good.

yeah you could stick it inside your swb rear end, but you'd want to mount it to the chassis and not the body ofcourse

I have read a few threads and seen some pics of race cars doing this and I think it would be a great set up if done well.

Im pretty keen to make a set up on my car that Im doing now but I havent figured out how to do it without cutting the car into bits!
I also have an styleside LWB.
Plenty of room tho!

Im pretty sure gwagen has set up a LWb cab with a highmount in the back but it of course doesnt have the floor to worry about, being able to mount it under a tray.

Hey Steve do you think it would be easier to do with a lowmount?
That way when it spools on the drum it wouldnt have the amount of rope to try and go on the drum without bunching??

I think that unless you have a ute with a tray a lowmount is certainly the way to go.

The major advantage with this idea is that if you try and winch up a bank, it will lift the nose.

I would have thought that it wouldnt matter where the winch was it will be where the fairlead is mounted and cable exits?

Without doing the calculations I think it depends on your reference point.

It should be all about the fairlead position however what he's getting at is that the extra distance between the winch and fairlead moves the load and end points around (in the calculations) which gives a different force on the fairlead (and subsequent different "lift" to the front of the vehicle)

Simple example, get a piece of string (or the clothesline) tied off at one end, get a mass and hang it off the line really close to the loose end and see how hard you have to pull to get it to lift, then put it in the middle of the line and repeat. I haven't done the calculations but while I don't think it should change the force required, it probably does.

So yeh, not committing to either answer :p just explaining what I think he meant.

I did mine this way simply not to lose approach angle, and it also takes the winch weight from the front and puts in on the back, as you don't really have much weight on the back, most is in the front.

I use rope so even if it doesn't spool evenly it can bunch up a bit with out causing any issues. (it doesn't seem to bunch up though)

Here's my set up, photo is from when it was just done, 2007, gees that was a while ago..

We cut the fuel tank in half so there was plenty of room. Probably didn't need to but it makes for easy access to everything.

We cut the fairlead rollers in half so it's half the size of a normal one.

Steve what distance would you think the winch is from the fairlead?

Did you set it up exactly like the white SWB?

The rope goes straight from the winch to the fairlead in the pic, which might be 30percent angle?, and then under the car, through a short guiding/protection tube, then to the front aluminium fairlead block.

The white swb set up has the rope going through the cab. Mine goes under the cab.
