just rang Suzistore to see if they had a 2nd hand Baleno motor, now i know these guys can be a bit over the top for prices as i've been going there for years but to be told $3000 for a motor out of a wreck as is.. Seems a tad pricey to me but as i've never looked into buying a 2nd hand 1.6 i'm not too sure, how does this sound to the people of AZ??

Of course it depends on the motor, but $800-1500 is about average for a 2nd hander from teh wreckers. For $3000 I'd expect it to be reco'd.

I had one installed in my Vit which had done low ks, I saw the car it came out of.
That was 3 grand, 40thou motor, and installed. 3 month warranty.

Another wrecker just quoted me 1600 for a late model (coil pack) 1600 with Harness so definately a bit cheaper, i guess i might ask for Brian next time i call suzistore as the girl there usually quotes me high prices with a bit of attitude free of charge

You have to remember they are there to make money.
If you are going to do all the work yourself, but a runner. That way you can take it for a drive before hand. Sell parts you won't need, and sell the rest to the scrapy when you have finished.
It's a bit more time consuming, but at the end of the conversion you can recoup alot of the initial out lay back.

When you are in the process of selling off the parts you don't need for as much as you can get for them, have a think back to why you started this thread

That engine had about 35,000kms.

Thats absurd! They go for $800-$1500 everywhere else.

Rhino and Want33's both picked up running balenos for $250 or less each. Tell them to sit on their $3K motor and rotate.

I picked up a SPOA sierra with a 1.6 for $1700.. Sold the bits i didnt want and cost me $800 in the end... Theres some bloody cheap balenos going through the auctions..

i asked Brian on wed how much it would cost for a REBUILD 1.6 efi, and he said $2500, and 1.3 is $2200.

try and think how much it would cost for:
-skimmed head and or maybe block (add more if repair needs doing, (cracked or un-servicable)
-pistons,
-rings
-crankshaft/camshaft bearings,
-crank balance, weld/regrind
-cam balance, weld/regrind
-genuin, oil seals-gear cover
-new water pump
-timing belt,
-various gaskets
-fix or repair wiring harness
- plus all the labor to do it all

suzistore is the cheapest full engine rebuilder in perth by $300 for a 1.6 and $400 for a 1.3L.

instead of assuming stuff, just ask. remember its under a warranty, some stores dont offer this, plus other stores make you fit ur own timing belt and water pump

Without actually knowing what you asked, and how you said it, its difficult to say if it is too much... you really should go back to Suzistore and talk to them, and clarify, ask, why they are asking $3000, as i know, if they are charging $3000 for a low km engine, they would have a good reason why...

When Suzistore discovered a crack in my old Vits engine block, they quoted me, for a 2nd hand Baleno engine, $3500, but that included engine fitting/setup as well...

They build the engines there but they get there machining done else where

The $3000 was for engine supply only, no fitting and she didn't offer a warranty, saying that it was difficult getting any info out of her and she really made it sound like they did not really want to part with the engine, she made a point of saying that it was their only one and how rare they are.

when we bought our motor it cost us 200, from wreckers they where like 1600, that was last yr, prices shouldn have risen that much

She made it sound like rebuilding a 1.3 was a massive chore too... talk about scaring away customers

Spoke to one stop about the cracking of 1.6's and was told that it's because they overheat due to lack of maintenance.

I'd still like to go g16b, just got to look after the thing that's all, not really hard is it?
