Just finished painting my 84 SJ40 and thought I would share some pics.

Hooki it probably took about 3 or 4 days work which I did over about 2 weeks. Stripped most of her down and replaced all the door rubbers and weather strips, I did the bailey channels not to long ago.
I used Septone undercoat and Acrilic Jet Black from Super Cheap.

As Scrawn said it does need a coat of clear but I have to tidy a few spots up where the paint has come out all rough from the spray gun. Having never sprayed a car before I learnt a few lessons the hard way! I am on a month off at the moment so I should find time to get the clear coat on her.

Scrawn, got any advice for getting the clear coat on just right?

Tinted the windows as well which was a bit of a mission but happy with the result.

i heard somewhere if you spray a layer of thinners over the acrylic it brings out the shine.....

has anyone heard this before?

You could make carpet doors for your Steve. Kill two birds with one stone.

I would have painted the colour this way as well, but what you do is paint a nice thick coat of clear on (but not so it runs), wait about 15 minutes to about 1/2 hour so it is tac dry and then thin the paint out a bit more and do the same thing again. By the 4th coat you gun should have around 1/3 clear and 2/3 thinners. Give it one last coat, and when it dries you'll need to put sunglasses on to look at it. I'll post up a couple of photos of my old beemmer when I find them.

Bear in mind this was my first respray. I did go a bit full on as I was able to take my time. It was a bare metal respray. I file finished all bodywork. Painted in acrylic with no clear coat. When paint was dry, I rubbed back the entire car with 1200 wet and dry (wet) then gave it a buff before pinstriping etc. If I had to do it again, I'd do it in 2pac as it's not that hard to paint.

Hi Rockhopper, paint on the BMW looks good.

Rapson, personally I don't use clear over my acrilic either unless I am using a metalic paint. I usually just put plenty of coats on, thining as you go along as Rockhopper said. Then I block it back with 1200 wet and dry and get into it with the buff using a machine cutting compound, then finish with a polish. I have found that in our Qld climate clear tends to craze, bubble, lift etc within a few years unless you can put it on in a humidity and temp controled environment. It looks good mate, I don't think 4x4's need to be to shiney anyway
