I have picked up my next project from the car dump. It is a 95 5 dr Vit. 16v. I think it may have been burning a lot of oil, and the previous owner has over filled it by at least 2x more than normal. when we picked it up it was running but pretty rough though. Could this over filling have caused damage? if so what is likely?

2x's over full on the dipstick or does it have 9lt's in it??

I would think about 9 litres at least, it is way up the dip stick. The plan is to re build any way but I was curious as to what damage is likely as i have been told that over filling is not a good idea.

If u say you got it from a car dump, make sure its not water in the oil to make it look like it's over full with oil, could be water in the sump as well

Unless you drain the oil, its hard to say how much just by the dipstick.

The dipstick from empty to full is only a half litre or so, way up could be an extra litre.

Over filling will not damage the motor as such, it could be the cause of secondary issues, oil getting worked into a frothy state by the crank, and so not oiling properly.

Either way, rebuild.

If it's run that far over full it can bend rod's..

drain it & see what's in there
