[Rockhopper]

Got this problem with my Jim, that has been there ever since I've owned it, but I think I might look into it a little further. It's a twin cam m13a, and when I'm sitting at traffic lights at idle, sometimes, the engine feels like it's about to stall, and then the iac must take over and bring the revs back up, and then it settles back down to a normal idle. Sometimes, it'll do it once, sometimes it'll do it several times, sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Might be my imagination, but to me, it seems to do it more often if I've been driving it a little hard. Other than that, there are no check engine or idiot lights coming on, and the car runs like a dream. Anyone had any experiences with this before??

3 thing's come to mind,

1. the egr is sticking causing a "vacuum leak" of sort's, common problem with the M's

2. one of your coil's is breaking down.

3. another common fault is the TPS (throttle position sen) off idle "switch" is on it's way out, the TPS is non adjustable so you can't just tweak it a lil to solve the problem.
This will also cause a "dead" spot at low Rpm with very small amount's of acceleration. ( but so can the egr)

How many K's on it??

4. on the intake is a steel bracket that hold's the harness on the rear bank, easy to spot as it hold's it just before it goes under the intake.
Grab the harness on the under side of the bracket & give it a bit of a yank (eng running) & see if it start's to play up.
They like to stretch the harness in this spot, but for some stupid reason it's mainly the auto's that do it...

It's got 105000km's on it. I don't know the service history of it prior to me purchasing it. I would of thought if it was a coil breaking down, I'd feel it more when I was driving it. I'm taking it and the family for a drive to the southern highlands today. Might do a service on it next week, and check the egr valve. Will have to figure out how to check the tps.

yeah i've got the same prob in my 04 Jimny

if i'm braking while coming to a stop...the revs will drop quite low, like its about to stall...but never does.

mines got 114k on the clock

AC delco also do a combustion chamber cleaner that you get through holden.. that shit works good also.

Same Same as Godzilr even after fitting new coil.
Mine only does it on my short trip home at lunch, on the home approach.
short dogleg in second then sharp right up the curb breaking and clutch so i don't go through the closed driveway gate.
Idle drops, shudders a second then comes back up to normal idle.

Is your aircon on?

I have this problem on really hot days when I'm idling for a while. When I switch the aircon off the idling returns to normal.

Tested EGR as in diagram below with all tests @ 24ohms (borderline ??)



Then had a look at the TPS like this.








Not real clever at this stuff, but is my EGR on the way out and the TPS buggered?

Take the egr off & spray that shit through it, you can push it open to get all the shit out...........

mine dose this a bit as well. when i turn the aircon on it fixes the problem because it automatically brings the revs up slightly to compensate.

think i mite test my tps tomorrow now i know how to do it, thanks Moag

It's a spray cleaner that foam's up, they use it for upper cyl de carb's as par of the service schedule, Subaru dealer's..

tested my tps today when it was on pins 2 & 3 with the throttle closed it was reading .84 ohms when it was open was about 4.5 ohms.

Should be ok then, but they get a dead spot just off idle switch...

Yes. When I was finally able to get some time to root around with it, I gave it it's 105000 km service. I used that Subaru cleaner that Stekky mentioned just as per the directions on the can. I now use Suby cleaner on every car I service. It not only sorted out the idle problem, but the engine feels more powerful and responsive and it's improved the fuel economy. Good stuff.
