hey guys. rolled my sierra yesterday lol. was abit dumb
its a wide track with 31 inch tyres and 2 inch body and 2 inch suspension lift. my mate seems to think there prone to rolling. would they be any more likely to roll than the bigger cars like hiluxes and patrols and cruisers?

They need to be driven differently. You cannot always take the same lines as a patrol or cruiser.
What were you doing to roll it? I've always found them to be quite stable in the right hands

Everything is stable if you drive the right line and/or have a strap to help out in the hairy sections.

went up a pretty steep climp with ledges sorta thing. was silly. brakes werent bled so only had the last bit of the pedal and couldnt change gears coz clutch was playing up. picked 2nd gear low and went up. when it started slipping i just revved it out lol. bounced the front 3 times and over it went.
dont think it would have happened if my car was working right. would have gone 2 fist crawler gear maybe instead of 2nd. dunno. oh well

sierras are pretty stable i think... today i had mine on some huge side angles and it never felt dodgy. the time it was on a 50+ degree angle i had the tyres against the rut as i drove it so it wouldnt go anywhere anyway. common mistake people make is trying to keep away from the rut - that just means if you do lay it over the rut is going to hit the door/roof =)

Yeah look shit does happen. But I don't think you helped the situation by hitting a hard trail with a poorly maintained vehicle. Nor did you make it better by thumping the gas pedal.
Next time you'll know what NOT to do

Yep. Nothing you can do but learn from the situation.
I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. The brother in law was fucking around on this track and I was heckling him like you wouldn't believe, so he got out, threw the keys at me and said "you fuckin do it then!"
Anyways I rolled it

So that means I had 15 years before I actually went proper 4 wheeling, unless just laying it down for a nap doesn't count, in which case I still haven't been doing it wright, damn!!!

pic of the resting spot That doesnt look like a full 360 roll over, more like a fall on its side... Lesson learnt now... ajsr wrote: you havn't been 4wding untill youve rolled one
Yep i agree, my first Zook, a 1L NT Sierra, got tipped on its side... by me being an idiot and showing off... never did it again though... have a look at this thread, you can see mine on its side -
http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?nam ... =roll+club
And you can put your pic up there as well, as you have joined the roll over club now ! he he

yeah they fall on their side all the time, it's very common when 4wding on steep tracks with holes. Sierras are narrow and short, vey easy for a wheel to fall in a hole and fall over. If you had a lwb if probably wouldn't have happened in that spot. There's a fine line between making it up a steep hill and rolling it, which i don't think many people realise until it happens to them. Steep hills and short lifted cars don't go that well.
CompTruck wrote: . didnt know what to expect from my twin locked sierra.
I think i saw that one for sale not long ago. Have you had any 4wding experience? If you aren't sure of what to expect, i'd start small, because if you keep doing these hills you'll wreck your car and then give up and part it out.

I don't think that there's much difference between a sierra and a hilux in outright stability, but there are a few other differences that help suzukis fall over.
They are short, so they are easy to get across the track and into lines that a longer, bigger car couldn't consider,
And they have poor articulation and tall gearing stock. That means you have to hit stuff too fast and it's the bounce that takes the car over, not the angle.
Sierras are often bought by inexperienced drivers and/or people used to watching big cars with lots of compression travel in the suspension and lots of wheelbase. As Fatzook said - you have to drive them differently.
I'll add here that this is related to people new to suzukis to 4WDing. We fall over all the time, but we know exactly what we're trying to do at the time and never come away thinking "Geez - I didn't think it would fall over there"

i did abit of 4wdriving in my mq patrol last year. it went good but had to use speed to get up stuff as it was basically standard and had all terrain tyres
yer gunna start abit smaller next time after i fix it up
it was just a tip on its side this time. would hate to go all the way around. lol

This is exactly why I am putting an exo on mine, as much as I don't want to roll the thing, I won't mind if it does feel a bit tired and want to lay down for a nap as long as it's not going to take damage!
Doesn't mean I'll go charging anything more dangerous/harder, just that I'll not be shitting my pants as much when I'm on a hectic angle!

Not uncommon for a driver to jump into a twin locked car they are unfamilar with and put themself into an uncomfortable situation or drive them beyond the point of no return.
A well built sierra is as stable as can be and will be great on side angles.
Of course, with the right driver behind the wheel.
An inexperienced wheeler, or someone unfamilar with the handling aspects of a particular car is much more prone to get themselves into grief with lockers giving them the ability to put the car on odd angles.
This is why it is often suggested to start with a stocker and modify it as you learn the cars capabilities.
Your flop sounds like 100% user error and nothing to do with any shortcomings in the vehicles ability or it being prone to rollovers.

Lockers get you places like this.
I was heaps chill here because i know my car well. If this had of happened to me on the day i bought it i would have shit myself.
So x2 on driver experience and vehicle familiarity.

Holly shit! I'd be very worried if my car was on that angle haha....
I rolled a lux about 3yrs ago, so they fall over easy to.

Meh - if this is going to turn into post your funky angle shots:
It did ultimately flop, but not at that angle - it went quite a bit further.

I think anything is easy to roll if you go and find its point of balance and then try for more!!!!!!!!
But id say there is heaps you can do in a sierra that wont make you roll and still be able to drive in plenty of places.
just like said above, you have to pic your lines and drive to the car you are in at the time.
