hey just wondering has anyone tryed a auto box in a sierra with the crawler gears how did they find it ? good / bad ? .. im thinking of doing engine swap at the end of the year and thought putting auto box on the back would be good idea nice easy crawling haha pro's and cons please people thanks in advance

i love my auto box for crawling, im mated to 6.5 transfer gears and 5.29 lux diffs... works well for my driving

Quick rundown on the big cars in our club:

The trolley tug runs a Baleno 1.6 with a 3 speed trimatic with 6.5 transfer gears and 3.9 diffs, Q78 swampers - 3900rpm @ 100km/h on the highway.

Doof runs a Jimny/Baleno hybrid 1.6 with an AW-4, 6.4 transfer and 5.12 diffs, Q78 Swampers

Greg runs 1.3 Jimny with Jimny auto, 4.1 transfer and 5.12 gears with 35" Krawlers

Greyghost's hardtop runs 1.6 Carby into vitara 3 speed trimatic, 4.1 transfer and 3.7 diffs.

The hardtop is a little bit tall geared for my liking but works nonetheless. All the other cars are sweet on and offroad. Doof is especially sweet with the torque of the 1.6, 2.4:1 converter ratio and all the gears - it will idle up anyhting.

im in the process of thinking...sonyas sierra, we are thinking of going auto as well
at the moment its running gti headed 1.6.. we have a bare aw-4 and a trimatic 3 speed,
transfer gears are the cut and shut 1.3/1.0
diff gears are std 3.7 and air lockers..

my question is how will it drive auto up to and around 100. the car is by no means a road driven car but will go to the shops and get milk every so often..
at this stage we are undescided a use for the car as it sucks on most terrain but looking at more speed type events like coopers rally

any feed back will be great

Also, how is "Doof" onroad?

My sierra is seeing more road time these days as I use it for touring. However I'm researching dropping in an AW4 for more pleasant driving offroad, provided it's still a workable package onroad with my 6.5:1 transfer and 4.09:1 diff gears.

Gwagensteve - Greg with the 1.3 jimny, is that a g or m series engine?. Decent effort to turn 35s with that setup!, i have standard nt gears - 3.9?, and 4.16 gears and with 31 mongrels its average on the highway.

TryHard - Its something different to most people . I have an m13a auto in mine, its very nice for sneaking around and climbing things, less roaring on the clutch to climb up stuff and perhaps potential to be easier on the drive train, but that depends on how you drive it of course. Its better in rocky/slower situations imo, as the gap between low and 2 can be too great for really ripping into mud and sand dunes, ie low is too slow and 2 is too fast/underpowered. Whereas a manual car has a 2nd gear that is a good fit for some situations.

Reading Gwagens post though.. mine isn't great on the highway. So I'm thinking lower xfercase gearing or dif gearing could be worth it. I spend a fair bit with overdrive off really revving it to get up hills as it will keep trying to up change itself. So a manual has a few more gear options to take hills on. A tacho is on the way so i can see what its revving at to get a better idea for comparison .

well my main problems is i run 6.5s 31s .. will be going up to 33s soon ..

and i just find it a pain on the rocks and the sand i would be nice with a auto..
i mainly like driving on the rocks . so i would think it it would suit me nicely

Greg's car is G13BB. It isn't ever heavily loaded and never does long cruises on the highway, but it is smooth and quiet and hold speed OK. It could do with a touch more torque, but all up it's fine.

I think you need to push highway gearing back up to at least the revs a stock jimny is doing - so about 4Kish.

zookcubr - no, all sierra transfers.

mnemonix - doof is nice on road, even with Q78's. It doesn't have a tach but it will be spinning about 3500rpm @ 100 from my rough calcs. The tall OD on the AW-4 is the key to that. Drives very nicely.

11_evl - you didn't specify tyre size, but I think either box would be OK - AW-4 will be more forgiving of tyre size but more headache to get in and shifting though. As I've said before, if it's more of a bush car the trimatic is fine IMHO. The AW04 is very impressive if you can be bothered though.
