hi guys. i will be picking up a 89 swb zook in the nest couple weeks with a 1.6 vitara motor in it. i will be looking at doing a spoa conversion straight up as i have some 33 inch tyres off my dads hilux to go on it. now for transfer gears i have read heaps about them and people decide to go with the 6.5 gears for 33s. just wondering why no one goes for the 6.4 gears. i think they will be better for me as i haveto drive about 100km to get to some decent 4x4 tracks and want to keep the revs reasonably low at 100kmph

5.14.1 = 127% low and 18.3% high
6.4.1 = 181% low and 17% high
compared to
6.5.1 = 187% low and 20% high.

the 6.4.1 gears from what ive read on forums would give better highway driving but still crawl enuough in low4, am i correct?

you may find that 6.4s vs 6.5 is just down to how easy they are to get hold of. and cost. where are the 6.4s from and how to they compare in cost to the 6.5s from lowrange

would 6.5s keep my highway driving fine with spoa and 33s? i dont want it revvin off its head on a 100km drive. it does have an injected 1.6 if that would help

33" with 6.5s in my opinion isnt enough gear reduction. i reckon diffs also
need to be at least 4.1 with 4.8 being better.

you want to be doing at least 3600rpm at 100kph or you will have no power
and will use heaps of fuel.

so would a set of 4.57 diff gears from low range offroad matched with a set of 6.5.1 transfer gears be fine?

6.5s should be ok.

standard a WT sierra is doing around the 3300 rpm at 100 in 5th
on 33s and 6.5s you will be doing around the same revvs

the 1.6 will pull those revs on the highway fine.

if you get 6.5's and diff gears she will be revving more.

I had undersize 33's, stock 3.7 diff gears and 6.5's and it was fine. Never wanted to change it.

just another quick question. what else would be needed to run 33s. i will get spoa. maybe a body lift if i need to? the tyres are 33x12.5 so i will need a big offset rim so probly best to do wheel bearings before they go on. what else should i consider? got a fair bit of cash saved so throw ur sudjestions at me =)

You don't need spoa. This was my setup on 33's.

Spua
Front diff 25mm forward.
Rear diff 17mmish rearward
2" bodylift and alot of bashing of the seams (or you can virtual lift)
Spacer for front shaft
-25 or more offset rims, they will still rub on springs with -28's(i had -28's)
1" or more spring lift, ruf is a good upgrade( i had 1" and ruf)

Rear Commodore wag shocks in front and Rear lux/hiace shocks for rear is a good shock upgrade.

I didnt need it on mine, But i did it about 6mths after. It depends on the driver i guess.

Upgraded transfer mounts.

Chromo axles if locking the front.
Rear will be fine locked. It will only twist axles.
