As the title explains. I have a shitload of water in my fuel tank.

Car has been starting really rough of late and so started the quest to find the issue. I had a mate explain that Vitaras suck water in the tank really easy and that I should put a bottle of Metho in it to disperse the water. I have now pub in over 2lts of Metho and there is still over 100mm of water in my fuel tank.

How do I know? I syphoned fuel from my tank into a bottle making sure the hose is pushed all the way to the bottom. Sucked out some juice and let it sit in the bottle for a minute or so. Atleast 1/4 of a 1.25lt bottle was water.

Who else has had an issue with water being sucked into the tank?

I will be taking the tank out and re routing the breather to my diff breathers. Is there any other point on the tank that could take water in?

it wouldnt run with 100mm in the tank, water sits on the bottom where the pickup is, it would just suck water and not run

pull the tank out, rip the pump out and drain and flush it if there is that much in there, only take an hour

have you submerged the tank lately? fuel cap and filler hoses sealed?

your mate is an idiot, ive never heard of water in a vit tank and not had any in mine in 5 years

Injector cleaner/carby cleaners can help remove water,
in either carb or efi.
But I been using metho for a long time.
I leave enough in the bottle to use for the car, too

Yeah ive heard that when they dont seal the underground tanks properly the rain water gets in and then you pump it into your car. How long ago did you fill up before you started having trouble? I think that if you got water in the tank it wouldnt take long before it started running rough.

And i dont think the breather will be out into the atmosphere. It should go to the charcoal canister under the bonnet and not be a problem.

I have another transparent fuel filter after the fuel pump and the carb sitting where I can visibly see the fuel in it just below the carby hat. After putting 2 litres of Metho in the tank there is still water coming through. I can visibly see the line of water nearly half filling my fuel filter. My guess is it may be too much water just for crappy fuel?

I bet I know when it came in, 2 weeks ago in Wombat State forest. Went through alot of DEEP water.

I think it may be a tank out job. I'll let you know what I find.

Some older cars and trucks had a visible glass bowl type filter,
the glass bit was removeable with a clip,
enabling a bit of cleaning.

fuel storage tanks breath in and out with temperature changes and water builds up in every servos
fuel tanks and periodicity needs to be pumped out. a good servo will check water levels at least weekly, testing is as simple as smearing a
paste on the dip stick.

most servo fuel tanks can handle at least 3000ltrs of water before it affects
the fuel coming out of the pump.
well unless it gets stirred up by a fuel delivery.
