Hey guys
Just went to suzuki in werrbie and asked about the jimny, and he told me that victoria is the only state that has stoped selling jimnys, I asked why and the reason why is cause they dont have esp, and will cost to much to fit
Now any one got more info on this subject ? And opinnions ?
I thinks its bullshit, so what about the thounds of jimnys driving around vic with out esp and all the other cars, and really if you would need to use esp in a jimny well you desrve to crash I think, there not built for speed
Anyways ill leave it there

These and other 'innovative' safety features only serve to make drivers complacent. This means when it all comes unstuck they have no clue how to control the situation. Another symptom of the 'nanny nation' epidemic.

I just got home from a 3 day dash to Brisbane and back - around 1800Ks and passed many cars broken down at the side of the road and 3 crashed ones and only 1 was more than 5 years old and out here in the west most cars are well over 5 years old. Does this suggest something??????

They dont need to know, I for one am thankful that more cars will do their bit in a bad situation to avoid smacking into me rather than relying on teh ability of the numpty steering it

Personally, I'm a bit "meh" about ESP, as I've found it intrusive and a bit counter-intuitive in operation in the car I owned which was fitted with it (2005 Mini Cooper S)
However, I do believe it is effective in reducing single vehicle accidents. It's really just a function of ABS operation.
The fact is the road toll is a tiny fraction of what it was before safety systems were mandated in new cars.
ESP really has no effect on driver enjoyment or vehicle behaviour unless you've already started to loose control. I was only aware of it's operation a couple of times in the mini, mostly because I expected the car to slide and it didn't.
However lots of people spin cars and have no idea what happened. They were going to get into that position ESP or not. Having ESP to gather things up isn't such a terrible thing if it stops them driving into a pole or a family going the other direction.
I deliberately chose my last based on the lack of traction control and ESP (2007 STi WRX) but it was the last year that option was open to me. I can't avoid my next new car having both. I'll cope.
Steve.
I have no time for people who consider it an invasion of their liberties to be forced to buy a car with safety features. That's a completely retarded argument.

"Off" is rarely actually "off" totally. In most cars it's simply extremely loosened. There are relatively few cars where ESP can be totally disabled. Mercedes, for example, and I think Volkswagen, do not allow complete disengagement.
BMW do allow complete disabling of ESP, but it involves multiple button presses and retains a caution message on the dash for the duration that ESP is disabled.
Obviously, it's also a "soft" disable too - each time the car is restarted, it will re-engage.
The type of accident ESP is there to prevent will be the accident had by the person who doesn't know how to turn it off.
Steve.

Surely the Jimny is not the only car that you can no longer acquire in Vic due to this new legislation?
What other 4wd's have been taken off sale?

How long has the law been in place for? Suzuki would of had a good few months to plan for it, and their choice of action was to not modify the car to suit but to remove it from sale.... The final say was from the market who isnt buying enough cars to convince suzuki to fit ESP

1st contact Suzuki Australia and tell them you want a car etc.
If they have any decent customer service they will do something about getting you one.
2nd I have had 1st hand experience with Suzuki Australia in a dealership capacity and they are pretty hopeless with getting things done, (or were a few years ago) they people I worked for dumped them and went to VW and are making far better $$$
Suzuki Australia are prob still not 100% a the ball and wonder why they cant compete with the bigger manufactures.

I suspect that if there was to be an immanent model change (or update where ESP would be added), or there was a case that large numbers of cars were in stock and built prior to the requirement for ESP but yet to be complied, then an exemption might be granted.
Just thinking out loud.
I wonder how many Jimny's have been sold in Vic this year? 10? 20? And I wonder what the build date was on them? Jimny's are notoriously hard to sell. because they are rubbish and there is often a large lag between build date and compliance.
My guess is there is no business case to certify the jimny. It would require lots of engineering - possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars worth - and there's just no case.
My guess is the jimny will quietly slip off the radar.
Steve.

The government can't stop the boat people from coming in, so what makes you think they can stop them from bringing theirs cars with them?

I saw this coming years ago ( not the ESP thing....the suzuki letting the jimny slowly die thing)
Suzuki needs to re-invent themselves as far as the small 4wd market goes, cos the jimny is just a shadow of its predecessors.....

How does a State government have authority to decree such a thing? ADR's layout vehicle compliance and is a federal law.

Dunno. But the police can shoot to kill in VIC so maybe they have their own set of ADR's aswell?

and they wont - they have no interest in the small 4x4 market - especially since joining with VW to corner the small car market.
their focus is on city cars and thats it.
don't you remember that petition ages ago to bring out a sierra with a whole bunch of good stuff standard? suzuki australias reply was along the lines of "go away we're not interested" even though they had hundreds of thousands of signatures. Hell, look at how many of the silver marutis are being sold to farms, even that would justify a re-release given the level of interest... but it isnt in their business plan.
