Customers generally get what they want in2dep- if it's not viable for every manufacturer to offer a specialised 4wd because of low volume, buyers will move to the product that suits them. At the moment, we are lucky in Australia, we still get "utility" 4wd's like the coil patrol, defender, and 70 series cruiser. Many markets no longer get these vehicles because there's no market.

The big problem with the specialised 4wd user is that they aren't a new car buyer. They will buy at 5+ years old because they don't want to invest $50k in a new car and root it.

Don't necessarily read to much into the spec of the models at the launch. Th launch was in the middle east- there's no market for diesel or base models in the middle east. Whilst I'm sure the new patrol won't be as durable off road as the GU, there will be more mundane models, and a Diesel here.

Yeah thats what my magazine said (4wd action) its not made like a 4wd, its more like a paddel jumper for them city slickers wanting to go "out door" lol

But they did say nissan will be selling the gu side by side with the new for ppl wanting a real 4wd lol

The world is changing and I dont think I like it :(

There will be no mundane models of the new Y62 Patrol. All V8 petrol.

The GU is here to stay (with a new diesel engine).

And the FJ is not discontinued in the U.S.

I have read every post on here and while I do believe ESP and the like do have their place.

The main argument i can see is the DRIVER........ You can drive the best/most safe car on the market BUT IF YOU ARE STILL ON YOU FARKING MOBILE while doing your makeup (male/female) and reading a map at the same time you WILL have an accident.

The main push should be on driver reform, not just ESP

My solution (its not perfect) is that every time you update licence you redo the road law test theory and prac and if you fail you cant drive until you and retrained and retested. The road laws change from year to year and state to state.

there are jobs that you need to show VCC verification of current competence if you cant pass you cant do that job IE: forklift driver at some workplaces

Vehicle standards need to be addressed if your car is UNSAFE it is removed from road until fixed this needs to be monitored.

Again this is not perfect

You're right. They had announced that they were displeased with sales in North America, spoke of dropping it all together, but have decided to run it for 2012.

So not discontinued.....yet.

USA is a JEEP nation, and chevy/ford for trucks, with the odd toyota tacoma

toyota never sell there their landcruisers, hence why ppl just wont give a shit bout the FJ... prob the only reason is bcose the FJ40 it was sell over there in the early days

and with all the shit available for jeeps, and so cheap ppfff dtn see the reason for buy something else... also with the amounts of others SUVs... the FJ just doesnt fit in their market

bit of a shame becose the FJ its actually ridiculous cheap... a bit more expensive of wht we pay here for a new jimny

There is a easy way to have both worlds
Change the ADR to make every 4wd have a factory opt off road pack
"Lockers, 6.5,snorkel ,35's, portal hubs, and min 400mm ground clearance"
That way u could have any soft 4wd thats nice and low for city people then just add factory option and have a A grade capable 4wd with no custom unsafe mods.

I think everyone needs to take some nice deep breaths.

This thread got going because ESP has become compulsory in Victoria. It will shortly be compulsory in the rest of Australia.

Except for one guy who asked a dealer about a new Jimny (with no indication that he was going to buy one), there's no evidence this has inconvenienced anyone, nor is there any evidence this is going to inconvenience anyone in the future.

For those of you who think we are becoming a nanny state, you can move to somewhere less developed that isn't (yet). Remember to leave behind your health care, standard of living, independent court system, minimum wage etc with you.

Unfortunately, living in a modern Western democracy has its downsides, and it's that you can't do whatever you like, and that the Government assumes, on some issues, it knows better than you do for the benefit of the majority of the population.

I'm waiting for someone to mention how great it is in the US where you can build whatever you like. Sure you can - so long as you can afford it with no minimum wage, a toothless trade union movement and fawk all healthcare... that's even if you have a job with 10% unemployment. Pretty hard to argue about personal freedom when you're unemployed and have no health care.

got_bar_work - That's a great idea - quickly go and pitch it to the Greens right now. It would ensure that recreational 4WDing ceases to exist immediately. I'm not sure you could afford a $150K 4WD to go bush in - I know I can't.

Steve.

i have a 2010 jimny i reckon one of the last to sell here, perhaps that means that it will hold its value a little better if there are no more brought into vic, gee if it goes australia wide it will wreck the qld beach hire car scene. perhaps it devalues the car though as it will be harder to get parts?
