Are many people running welded diffs was wondering how they go on road does the car slide around a lot do your tires last very long cause I am just wondering if it's a better way then an auto locker and I just wanted to know about them

I prefer welded rather than auto. They are more predictable. Tyre wear will be slightly more than an auto locker, and heaps more than open diff. Wet weather cornering will be exciting also.

I bought a mini spool, might as well do it right the first time.

I havn't had any issues with wet weather cornering on the road, and with any car, when your wipers are you should wipe off 10Kph. Everyday driving is interesting especially when pulling into car parks. And yes tyre wear increases, But I expected that.

Off road, It's awesome.

i loved mine when it was welded... was awesome fun =) haha

it did get old in concrete carparks though - sounded like i was laying a strip even though i was just trying to pull into a parking bay.

they definitely attract attention, but given the choice i'd still take welded over auto-lockers anyday... but then i'd take my current airlocker over that too.

Ahh ok so should I weld my rear diff in my Sierra I drive it to work every day and go 4wding every weekend work is only 20 mins away so would it be ok to weld would i need to change the way I drive

i only welded mine cos i busted it... once i was engineering it it wasnt allowed to be welded anymore so i went an airlocker.

as long as you understand that its illegal then do what you want =)

Buzz box where did you get your spool and how much?

How do you think a minispool would go in the front?!

Mine was welded for most of suz's life when i had her.

My experience: One bad thing is tyre wear, but i had my tyres for 2 years..And sold the car with 30%left on them.. I used to swap between 2 cars, but loved and rathered drive suz whenever i could. Diff backlash can be a problem under heavy stresses 2 tyres full grip onroad can be good, but bad also, And twisting axles, with normal driving is a problem.. I can show you one if you like

You might be ok on smaller tyres, all my probs were on my 33's.

Wet, you can drive normal, but high speed tight corners, watch out as the arse can step out and scare you, and low speed tight corners, watch out or the arse can whoa awesome you.

My new one will be air/e-locked, but i never regreted welding the rear.

Its also illegal for a permanetly locked diff, incase your worried.

Haha! Front and back Minispool! It would be a 100mt turning circle and a CV munching beast from hell!

unlock a hub & it will turn, but yeah not the ideal set up for a mild 4wd of any type, an auto unlocker would be better in the front than a spool.

are you remembering my poorly set up ones from rope road?

i run a welded rear, it's good, solid reliable, on the highway or roads you forget it's there, cornering i only hear the occasional chirp, and carparks make you think different, like how can i drive-park-and drive straight out again

Lowrange offroad

Installation into the front would be the same if not slightly easier than the rear. But I'd imagine the CV's won't like it one bit at all.

I grew up on locked rear ends (welded) in all kinds of cars, only problem i had was axles breaking. Been considering welding the coily rear end but wasnt sure how strong the axles are.

Its beyond me why auto lockers are unpopular, mine works a treat, I go where others can't with ease and on road no problems. The physics behind welded diffs make cornering on hard surfaces potentially unsafe, goto wonder what is more important?

So can you explain how the physics of an auto locker makes them safer than welded? I've driven auto locked front off road and I reckon they feel horrible. I've driven auto locked rear on road an reckon they drive terribly. Playing pitch and catch on long corners is spookier than a spool in my book. I'm spooled rear and air locked front for the record.

Yeah, the auto unlockers aren't awesome on the road. Offroad they're good or obvious reasons.

In and ideal world airlockers win. But in a low budget reality the difference between auto and welded/spool is opinion based.

Maybe its the way the auto locker was setup? normal driving I would not know it was there.
Correct me if I'm wrong but with a welded diff when cornering one tyre must loose traction as both wheels rotate at different speeds, can't see how loosing traction is safer than maintaining it,

Could hardly even tell I had a locker in my old sierra, only quiet ticking around corners. Yeah I changed my driving style a little but that was prob for the better anyways, just dont stomp it through a corner. I have no problem with awell set locker

Round a bouts in the wet you know it's there. And low speed maneuverings. But with the spool it's more predictable.
