lookin at getting extanded shocks whats better rancho 9000x or old man emu?

i havnt had ranchos but i reacon they r the best u can get for the price bcoz they r agestable which makes for a better ride but if u dont want to spend as much money the old man emu shocks r good jst make sure they r longer enough bcoz when i had them in my car i had a 50mm lift n the old man emu shocks were a bit short bcoz they were for a 40 mm lift

What do you mean by better???
Are you after comfort , durability or extended travel.
I've just been comparing them on paper for my Vitara and at least rancho 9000 's are adjustable and travel aleast an extra 50mm .
Unless any one has compared them in simalar conditions etc it's anyones opinion. I'm going to give rancho a go for the travel plus the added bonus of adjusting them when i load up for camping .

im not really after comfort more after a capable 4wd. im wanting to get 3inch lifted springs so i think ill need the rancho's by the sound of it.

search through here, I think we have 1 person with modified mounts and ranchos (extra long) and a million people with VS wagon rears in the front and hilux rears laid over in the back

Royce are suggesting getting shocks from the wreckers.
i thought about it ,but you don't really know what condition or or how much life is left in them. i suppose it depends how how buget conscious you are, and how ruff your vechile is.

The commo shocks and lux shocks arent from wrecks. They are generally new replacement gabriels from supercheap. They aren't deisgned for the suzis weight but they do a good enough job on an offorader which most of the boys on here are.

hell no, you can buy commodore and hilux shocks new you know

its not so much that its about saving money its more about that generally speaking, most stuff designed as aftermarket stuff for sierras is basically shit and expensive, lifted springs that are way too stiff, shocks that dont even fit at ride height, bushes that are too stiff to work and so on

so plenty of people have spent time working out what works, so we end up with things like RUF, mazda rears, Bruces bushes, commodore shocks that give the results we want, not some crap in a box made my somebody thats never been offroad in a suzuki

ranchos are foam cell....foam cell is shit....many years ago my mates used to run heaps of em....now they all run gas shocks. there is no comfort and they are not valved right. kyb in japan make some ace 9 way adjustable nitro shocks for zooks that you can buy from factory....but not here....

I'm pretty sold at the moment of going with a 3/4 eliptical spring setup (dont try to convince me here move it to another thread if so be...) so what sort of shocks would i want for this? It will be pinned as if running regular 2" springs in the back while on road, but once off and it is necessary i want to un pin it and let the back end flex. So it is almost as if two completely different shock set-ups are needed any suggestions?

I had adjustable Ranchos in my first gq patrol, which I thought were pretty good. I put big bore adjustable tough dogs in my second patrol when I raised it 6", and I did'nt think they were as good.

zook_fan for the 3/4 springs you'll need to in bourd the shocks( prob right to the center to get a long enough shock in there to match the drop of the springs) and get some pretty stiff shockes.

i'll be doing the same set up and just using hilux rear shocks.

do they mount to original point on the lower end? does it make the ride any harsher?

yes they mount to the bottom shock mount.

no they make the ride softer, the shock isn't compressing as much so they arn't as harsh.

I have 2" rear springs and Rear Suzuki Carry springs up front. Shocks I'm running are:
Gabriel part no. 81318 for rear (Jackaroo)
Gabriel part no. 81340 for front (vs commodore wag.)

The fronts fit well with a 1" bumpstop extension, and have enough flex for a RUF. With the rears I have a custom shock mount setup similar to the one just_cruizin posted, which moved the top mount inward allowing for the extra length.

The are quite a soft shock and I reckon they are valved perfect for a sierra, a very comfy ride. They run at about $35 each from Supercheap.

Pic below shows flex achievable with Carry springs up front(RUF). Note shocks were not connected only because I was measuring to make sure they were still long enough, which they were.
