Hi.
Is it easy enough to replace the oil sump on a 92 vitara G16B while the engine is still in?
It looks like there ain't much room between tranny cross member etc.
Is it possible to replace or do you have to pull motor or maybe just undo engine mounts and lift it up enough with an engine crane?
Any hints appreciated.

yep you can do it, ive done it on mine which is an B block and A sump but id gather the sumps are about the same, remove front diff which is pretty easy, turn the wheel to full lock and there will be just enough room to do it.
though i did it on a hoist which is easier to reach stuff, i did it cos i wasnt gonna take motor back out for that oil leak

Yeah. The annoying thing for me is that I had my engine out last weekend for a swap and didn't notice that the new import engine had a ding in the sump till after it was in. The lowest point of the sump (where the plug is obviously) has been bashed up which means that there will always be a certain amount of dirty oil that won't drain out.
Got do do an engine mount this weekend anyway so guess I'll do the sump too.

What about jacking the chassis up and putting it on stands so the diff hangs down at full extension? Would that give you enough room?

not hard at all, but teracis's idea wont work cos its IFS on a vit.
just undo the axel off the side of the diff, undo the drive shaft and the mounts on the front diff and you can slip the other axel out, all without taking wheels or hubs off just feeling my way through without having done it before took 20min but once again ill point out i was using a hoist so its really easy when you can stand underneath,
yeah i share your annoyance i was in a similar boat id just rebuilt the motor, and was leaking in one spot, and really didnt want to take motor back out also

My bad, I keep forgetting they are IFS front, all I've got to go off is my sierra :p
Also, at the risk of wrecking the sump, since you say the bolt is knocked in anyway, could you put an eye bolt in the sump plug hole and pull the ding back out?
Just an idea, as I said, might ruin the sump...
EDIT: Actually that's just being really lazy, just take the sump off and fix it while it's out :p
