Just do that then.
If you have the head off then get cyl1 to TDC and look at where the front pulley key way on the crank lines up with. Should be vertical if I recall. Then setup the head to see when cyl 1 valves are closed and take note of the key way position on the cam.
Once you have it all back together as per above then just set the dizzy rotor to point roughly to #1 in the cap.

'G' series motors are setup on #4

I rebuilt my G13ba, set all timing and everything according to the workshop manual and couldn't figure out y I couldn't get it running, then realized that my firing order is arse about. All I did was rotate the crank 1 turn and repositioned the dizzy to TDC, now fires 1 at the front

Not to start a shit fight but what's the difference if you set it up on 1 or 4? If you didn't the service manual and hence didn't know to set it up on 4 but followed my procedure would it run no problems? I believe so.
Notice I did not state lining up the keyway on the crank or cam with anything in particular I just said take note when your at TDC1 and valves are closed on the head for #1, keyways on both cam and crank being vertical as I recall.

the keyway is up on number 4, doesnt really mean its set on number 4, jsut if you set it like a Corolla its ass about
Does one of those links cover putting the cam pulley on the right keyway mark? I didnt look

Yeah, ok...... might be a bit hard setting a G10 on #4

If you weren't aware, and just went ahead and lined up the cam and crank marks, thinking that should be timed to #1, it wouldn't run. You could set it to valves closed on number 1 but how would you know if you had the right tooth on the cam pulley? IMO it's just easier to line up the timing marks and then set the dizzy to #4

Lined them up so the keyways are vertical you only have two choices for each. Either valves are closed or open on 1/4 and #1/4 pistons are either at TDC and BTDC.
So why wouldn't it run regardless of if cyl1 or cyl4 was at TDC, valves closed on that particular cyl and the dizzy pointing to that particular spark plug lead?
Firing order of the G13 is 1342 which is the same as 4213. Thus regardless of which way you set it up it will still run.
To the OP, just line up the marks on the cam/crank pulleys with whats on the block then figure out which cylinder is at TDC with it's valves closed and point the dizzy rotor to that particular cylinder. That will get you started at least. Then set your timing.

That's true, but it wasn't what I meant - I have a G13B (8v SOHC) in a Swift, it sets up on #1

IMO it's just easier to line up the timing marks and then set the dizzy to #4 If you don't know what your doing, you need to follow the books way. If you no what your doing, you don't need to ask questions, and so do it as you want. Lined them up so the keyways are vertical you only have two choices for each. Either valves are closed or open on 1/4 and #1/4 pistons are either at TDC and BTDC. If you dont no what your doing, you need to follow the book.
If you no what your doing, no need to ask how to do it.

Sorry I assume a lil bit of mechanical knowledge when questions like that are asked.
In terms of 'if you don't know what your doing, you need to follow the book' if I gave you a toyota, honda, suzuki any 4 cyl dizzy motor with the head off and you didn't 'have' the book your telling me you wouldn't be able to put in back together and get it running?

no, not at all, thats why id ask, and hopefully be able to find something on the net, and do it that way.
Im not having a go at ya, far from it, you are 100% right, my mechanic mate does it off number 1, but he gve me some written stuff on it and it told me off number 4, so that is how I did it when i did the head gasket.
Gimme an old 6 cylinder, or V8, no dramas, blindfold, overhead cam, by the book for me.

You're absolutely right JrZook, I just think for simplicity sake it's easier to suggest setup on #4. I just assume (maybe wrongly so?) that model specific knowledge may be minimal due to the question
