I'm after a uni joint and would prefer to get Koyo oem ones. Low Range Offroad has them for US$75 which seems a little expensive?. I haven't tried the dealer but I imagine they wouldn't be any cheaper. Bearing Wholesalers don't list Koyo uni's for sierra's and the numbers I gave them from the uni joints in my Sierra didn't match any numbers they have for Koyo uni's.

Never paid any attention to brand names, but every uni I've bought from Bearing Wholesalers has been very good.

They sold me 1Litre sierra uni's which are slightly too small for my driveshaft and don't seem to list any other uni's for sierra's so it seems they couldn't really help me. I have heard the non-greaseable Koyo OEM uni's are strongest so figured I'd try and get them.

I certainly have had a good run from all the original unis, much more than after market ones....no need to remember to grease them either )
I guess all mine have been 1.0 litre unis, strange they still stock old stuff

Hardy spicer u-joints from driveline services bout $30ea. They seem alot better then the koyo ones (no play at all when new)

no uni should have play in it from new... ever!

if Wholesalers supplied you the smaller ones, tell them you RUJ-1795. they are physically the same but instead of a 22mm end cap, they have a 25mm end cap.

RUJ1783 with external circlips, or RUJ1795 with internal circlips.

Koyo numbers for the External circlip is RC1518-CC1A, Internal type is RC1518-RCC1.

What brands have grease nipples in them ( Vitara) . Repco use to.
I do prefer to be able to give them a small squirt after I have driven through any water.

thanks for all the replies. I'm going to see if Weaves can get them.

I believe i need uni's with the external clip. The one I bought ( Toyo RUJ1795) has the groove in the caps to allow for internal clips. The uni fits my 1.3 WT driveshaft but has about 1mm of play between the cross and the caps. I fitted the clips into the groove in the driveshaft and pinion yoke holes, same as all the other original koyo uni's on the sierra are fitted.

Koyo have the nipple, i always get mine from a local auto store.

Ive found that koyo have been the cheapest out of the brands but best.

Make sure your getting Koyo not Toyo, Toyo are cheap crap...
Try a Suzuki dealer spare parts you may be surprised.

I'm trying to locate koyo uni's for a Vitara, but this seems impossible. contacting koyo and they say they don't have them. Best I've been able to find is Toyo (greasable) for $30 each.
Hardy Spicer ones are actually GMB now.
I've had uni's fail twice now with less then 20000km on them, not sure what brand the shop put in, but they are a waste of time.
Suzuki (which are likely to be Koyo) are $114 a pop, but none in the country and 1-2 months away.
From reading this thread and others around the traps, people seem to be confusing Toyo with Koyo. Toyo are made in Japan, anyone have anything bad to say about them ? I'm kinda running out of options in what I can source...have called all over the country and most places only stock Toyo or Hardy Spicer (which is GMB brand).

The post above says toyo is shit, mwhich they are, I bought 15 of them for $3 each once, was still overpriced

Search for the guy on ebay selling pairs of them for about $50 in NSW, I bought some a few weeks ago and they are GMB, if you have problems with GMB youve fitted them wrong

I have been running these for quite a while now. Finally found a u-joint that had 0 slop when installed new. They have been going strong now for over a year in all sorts of conditions. Still no slop, noise or vibrations.

thanks for the replies. keep hearing differing opinions between toyo and gmb, so it's not easy making a decision. Just getting tired of uni's failing every 12 months. Yeah I know the guy selling the ebay ones, kit (x2) for $50

I found out the brand that were installed were called Drivepro

the part number was 902018 (not RUJ1783). I just went down and spoke with the guy that replaced the uni's. There is 0.1mm diff between a 902018 & 1783. His somewhat older driveline book says 902018 is for a vitara (63.9mm), and a 1783 is for a mazda (63.8mm)...not sure what that measurement is for. The caps were both 25mm.

Why they are failing, I don't know. The originals lasted 190,000km, the 1st set of replacements lasted 14,000 and the second set lasted 20,000. These drivepro ones are non greasable ones. I don't do alot of offroad, but my last week trip was spent in the high country last November, with alot of water crossings (which also destroyed my front wheel bearings). I've been trying to find another driveshaft (wide spline) that has the original uni's but not found one yet.

Anyone heard of this part number 902018 ? That's what's been installed, per the guys driveline services book (which is a tad old....it could be wrong).

Driveline services source their own gear so it might jsut be a generic number to them

what fails in them? is there any sign of corrosion in the caps? any wear in the cross?

you'll have to forgive me for not knowing much about uni's, but there's simply excessive movement. There's say 2mm movement one way at the diff end, and 0.5mm one way at the transfer case end. As the drive shaft turns it's 'ticking' away. I'll have to have a closer look at them, but I don't believe there's any corrosion visually from the outside.

was a little excessive on the movement, just had a quick look. It's more like just under 1mm at the diff end (alot), and very minor movement at the xfer end. caps look ok from what I can see. The guy that installed them blames water causing the failure (better not drive in the rain then!!)...
