can anyone tell me roughly where the idle mixture screw should be set on my carb? it was out 5 1/2 out when I got and guessing it should be around 2-3.

Depends on how good the carby and engine is, Turn it in till the idle drops, then wind it back out till its idling at its highest, If you keep winding out the idle should drop again, If not you have a blockage in the idle circuit of the carby.
