hi guys

Im after a new car, ive been searching for 4 door 2 litre vitaras, and i test drove one, it was a bit slower than i was hoping. But in the process i found some grand vitaras which i noticed are 2.5 litre so i was thinking it be nice to have a more powerful slightly new rig, thoughi prefer the look of the vitara to the gv.

I was wondering though what are the differences apart from the look and the engine? is one better for 4 wheel driving? one easier to get parts to modify for 4wding? (eg diff swaps for different ratios for bigger tyres etc)

any other general comparison stuff i should know about?

i appreciate any advice about the two rigs to help make my decision. I would personally prefer the older vitara, but if the grand vitara is overwhelmingly better for a similar price id prob get that, plus the 4 door 2 litre vitaras seem really hard to find..

btw i dont mean to get really serious with mods or anything, i want it to be a good for cruising on the highway but still capable for offroading, mud and snow, general fun. I was mainly planning on a suspension lift and maybe 31s and gear adjustments to suit

you can put 5.12 diff centers from a 1.6L vit into the 2L vits for running bigger tires.

GV's have steel front diff rather than alloy in vitaras but i have heard that the early GV's still had alloy. maybe someone else can confirm that.

i also like the look of vits over GV's

I vote 2.5L GV manual 98

No airbags so you can still body lift it and for roof racks that just clamp on the rails unlike the vitara with the rivets into the roof and it's harder to get 2L parts due to the short model run.

what about the diffs in the gv? what are the options to correct the gearing for bigger tyres? do they have a actual chassis like vitaras and sierras?

how much do u think a standard manual 98 grand vitara with 100 000 ks on it should cost?

The front diffs in the 98 GV are a mix & match so you just have to check the one your looking at. You can also put 5.12 into the GV. More Power, parts are not too bad to source, more mod cons and same body shape up to 2005 so will be more popular later on. They do have their problems, but what 13 yr old car doesn't. I've had mine for almost 5 years and very happy with it. Only major problems I've had have been my fault.

$7,000 - $10,000.
they do have a chassis,
5.12 or 4.8

Diff ratios available are 5.12, 4.8, 4.3. Yopu can swap some Vitara centers in. Lockright lockers will fit with some mods. Vitara airleakers also fit.

I bought my 98 GV last year with 163,00kms on it for $5000.00 no reg or RWC. its a 2.5 V6 manual. Ive since spent just over $3.5k on it to get it where it is. Locked, lifted, re-geared, winch and lots more. Parts are actually easy to get if you know where to look and are paitent.

Most go for about $8-15k

Get the gv. You can do the same mods as the vit, transfer, diff ratios, 31's, body lift, air or auto lockers front and rear. As more people mod gv's it will become cheaper and easier. Not to mention the 2.5 L and aircon

Go the Vit, simply because there isn't that many modded SV620s on here and I'd like to see another one

They don't command much cash these days so I imagine you'd be able to get a decent one for $5k or so. The $3 - $4k you will save over the GV will be enough to mod the absolute shit out of it.

thanks for the advice guys, ill keep my eye out for a gv, theres one in adelaide with low ks for 8 k, might have to go on a road trip.

it wouldnt happen to be easy to swap a 2.5 from the gv into the vitara would it?

If you want a great, and very comfy road tourer, with offroad ability, and power to spare, then the GV is what you want... put in a lift kit, fit some good rubber, 245's fit on the standard rims easily, and it will go most places you put in front of it... if you want it to go harder offroad, then do as suggested above...

225/75/16 fit and are still very driveable with stock gearing. any bigger and you have to start cutting plastic trims for clearance.

Very Good buy !

I have the Ironman 35mm lift kit thats on ebay, in my 01 GV, and i am very happy with it, i got 55mm lift in the rear empty, with toolbox and other gear 40mm... it is stiffer/firmer than stock, but its not uncomfortable, i like the firmness, and loosing the body roll around corners was good... as for offroad, no more underbody bangs or scrapes, plus i have got some good air, and they are still going strong, and i got almost twice the flex over stock...

nice buy mate im sure you will have some fun in it ive got outdoor auto springs in mine they ride well but thats about all i can say

i have dobinson struts in the front which seem great and are 40mm extended i know king springs do 40mm lifted springs for these and rear shocks im yet to find a good cheap option for as i find my commodore shocks to soft for the extra wieght in the lwb

you can get it at arb, tjm etc or clark rubber.
or bunnings garden edging

Garden edging on the pastic trim doesn't really work and with out wrecking your gearing 225/75/16 is props as big as you want to go as bigger will wreck gearing and need to cut plastic and alike. With that size tyre on standard rims you won't need the flare material
