I can't think of a down side.

-Can be kept out of the weather.
-Could be set up so the hitch comes through the standard bar and could be covered by the number plate when not in use.

Does anyone run one of these?

i guess with the limited real estate of a zook you don't really want extra things in the tub?

i am STILL kicking myself for not getting a winch that was mounted inside an oem bumper. So tidy and out of the way

The weAther argument is a little void. Most winches are pretty well sealed.

You have extra connections to fail. More space taken up inside the car. Would be a pain to lug through a bog hole. Slot in, connect up, then pack away again because its acting as a grader blade.

Good to winch from behind. But a couple of snatch blocks and another car or some trees will sort that out.

Possibly good for agriculture but I cant see a real benefit over a winch fitted to a well thought out bar.

Think of this.
When do you need to use a winch?
You've got it bogged to the chassis rails. How easy is it going to be to hook this thing up?
You're on a steep hill with a step up. Its not going to be fun lugging it around safely trying to hook it up either.

I had though about this setup before too but the only time you need a winch is usually not the most convenient position to install it. JMHO.

The only good hand winch is one somebody else is pumping the handle on

I liked the one some mob use to make that was teh winch bolted to a plate with holes to shcakle it via straps to whatever you are winching, combined with one of them compact tigerz winches it would be a useful tool

i would set fire to a car and walk home rather then use a hand winch. fucken horrible things.

on of the problems with sticking a winch on ya tow bar is getting the power to it.
big winches need 450+ amps and that is some serious cable. i have a 175amp anderson plug on the back of my LWB
and using 32mm2 cable i reckon i get a bit off voltage drop.

I'd like to keep the stock front bar, but I don't think there would be room for a decent size winch behind there.

My other option would be a Tirfor, but it would be exactly the same as circumstances.

I mean 6000lb. Says it's good for a vechicle upto 2720kg's.
Its 31kg with a steel rope, so a nylon would bring it down another couple of kilos.

That's what I'll be getting when I've got the funds. And it doesnt look too tight to squeeze a winch in there... Would be tricker to make the cradle then mount the stock bar over top of it. I shouldn't speak because I've never tried though.

I still like the idea of the portable. Bracket flushmounted into the bar covered by the front plate.
Would be pesy to have one winch set up for two cars.



Has anyone used a winch but not had it mounted. Rope to the tree and then whinch with a couple of straps to recovery points.

I didnt say I would own one
I'd rather die in the bush than winch myself by hand out of anything
I do however think it solves the problem of a movable winch

I did cut the under grill part of the front clip but only for the solenoid box and freespool release lever.
If the solenoid box were remounted say in the engine bay and the gearbox rotated so the release lever pointed down, no cutting would have been needed.
I left the lever facing up so it would be easier to see and use.
That $400 chinese winch is still on there and still going strong... No service or maintenance yet...

Do you think it would all still fit without the body lift?

It may possibly fit simbo, Mine is designed to fit with no bodylift for a larger Aldi 9500lbs. I have my ps box on the outside though for more winch room. Front clip is cut, but not the grill. Solinoid box will be inside the clip somewhere, and handle was modified to suit so it goes east west, instead of nrth south. (i was going to make one, then i accidently broke it anyway) Not for stock bar though. I will try and have a look later for you see if it fits.

Yes that was the pic, i'll go fix it soon. There is no real reason why awinch cant be mounted on its side (90 degrees, winch top facing front) or upside down is there?

I've had the gearbox side apart and nothing much to it. Just a lock ring and a few gear sets.

It is possible but how would you mount it.. There would need to be some serious steelwork fitted.
