Hi all.
I drive a '93 4.2 Turbo diesel 80 series but I want to buy a Jimny for a daily driver + occasional offroading.
I want to spend around $10-12k. I've seen a few on Carsales & ebay but some of these have the push-button 4WD activation (not the small stick). Can anyone give me any info on what the push-button model Jimnys are like?

Any other advice on buying a Jimny in this price range also welcome.

saves you getting out of your car when its covered in mud.
saves you probably 30 seconds of your time.
but without lift id suggest getting the cover plates because i have been told if its not lifted and you rip the wires out on something underneath you wont be able to get it back to 2wd.
someone correct me if im wrong on that one.

I have the push button model jimny...i have mine threw water, mud and have done heaps of beach driving . I have not have a issue with it yet!

For 10-12K I'd be looking for the pushbutton Jimny. The 'push button' model is the face lift model from 2005 onwards. You may not like the buttons as much as a second stick, but they are just as good. The dash and interior is a massive leap forwards compared to pre-2005 models, it was well worth the extra cash in my opinion when I was shopping around.

If you are purely buying a jimny to go bashing around in the bush, then all the above doesn't really matter. If you drive on road a fair bit then you will appreciate the nicer interior in 2005 - models.

Even twin stick jimnys have auto hubs, (some may have been manual, but i've never seen one.) so you don't have to get out anyway.


I've had a push button one, and have a stick one now, someitmes the button one had trouble engaging 4L, but i'd just reverse a meter, try again, drive foreward a meter, try again until it worked, only happend a couple of times, and never took more than two minutes to work.

As for buying advice, there's no real trouble areas to watch out for as far as i know, the later the model you can get in your price range the better if you don't intend to modify it much.
Get pre airbag if you want to modify it extensively.
VVT ones are better for daily driving i reckon, less peaky, and more flexible.

Push buttons great I love it, don't have to stop when shifting from 2wd to 4wd, great for when you adventuring and keep crossing the black stuff then back onto the dirt. Also great with icy, snowy roads.

If you intend on modifying it...get the 1.5 series build between Oct 2000-Dec 2000 (very rare model). Has all the series 1 gear plus a better engine. It also does not have airbag which is easy on body lift mod.

Called the $18k one & he said someone's coming from Melbourne to buy it for that price on Friday. Also said he'd only come down a few hundred. The $15k one doesn't have a phone number, have to contact through carsales which I've done & still waiting for reply from him.

I paid $13250 for my 2008 Jimny Trecker with about 40,000 kms on the clock. A few small scratches here and there but generally very nice condition. That was from a Mitsubishi Dealer Clearance in Sydney.

Just picked it up. 2008 model. $13K. It already has an ARB bar, UHF, snorkel, compressor & rear ARB air locker. 63,000kms.

My Lj I dont have to stop either. Cause its only a dog gear that slides over the top and engages 4wd. Hang on thats pretty much every 4wd

Lift your foot off the accelarator, move the stick ( as long as your hubs are engaged so that both shafts are spinning at the same speed) and its goes from 2wd to 4wd and back again

Sierras are the same - i can't now with reduction gears, but i also used to be able to rev match and go from 4hi to 4low on the fly as well.

Thanks. It's just a standard TJM snorkel. I'm getting an OME suspension lift for it next week and I want to replace the stereo soon as well.
