oil and smoke seems to be coming from the inside of the header pipes out at the flange that joins onto the exhaust. has anyone else had this. sounds like the rings are gone to me but it feels fine.

if the smoke is only coming from where the manifold bolts to the head may be just the tappet cover gasket leaking. if its leaking at the next join down and pumping smoke out the tailpipe aswell good chance it needs a set of rings, but if its going ok and the smoke is bearable just keep the oil up to it.

Are you sure its actually oil, not just soot mixed with condensation?

I very recently had a valve lose it's seal entirely which led to high oil consumption only 3cyl running with a cloud of smoke behind me and exhaust filled with oil, I don't want to know what my cat
Looks like..
Take the exhaust off of the manifold and stick your fingers in and touch the inner wall of the manifold, if it's thick grime it's oil. If it's just black and gives you black fingers then rubs off easily bolt it back together and go wheeling :D

If you started it, within about 5seconds it would have covered the spark plug in cleanish oil(not gradual build up). And driving up the street I covered the whole street in a cloud.

Ask turbo_deo, we had a fun drive home the other week :D
