Hi,
I am thinking of putting a small 14 hp diesel yanmar (2cylinder )or (3 cyl kubota motor a few more hp haha) into out 1982 suzy trayback. I am not worried about it being gutless. Its a property vehicle and I am after mpg and reliability not rock climber, range rover eating off the line drag times.

Do it, no one else has.
i know the daihatsu hijet minivans once came in 3cyl 1l diesel/ The gearbox and engine orientation would of made things easier but finding one would be a challenge. In the states they have the VW diesel engines
now for the completely sane answer. F10a engines are extremly realiable if looked after properly (suzuki published that an aussie 1l engine kicked over 600 000+kms without ever being openend. just standard servicing and belt changes etc.) and if tuned properly on a farm your low speed would make it reaaly good fuelwise... you could convert it to run on ethanol, wood gas or methane if you wanted to spend zilch on fuel.
but back to my original statement do it and let us know

I have found a new yanmar $1600 and I will get a price off dellow automotive for a bellhousing. Worse case senerio is I would have to put some lower gears in the transfer case. I have rebuilt the f10a motor 3 times over the years and it keeps on going. But i am after something to run bio-diesel through when the shit hits the fan with fuel and the economy in the next year or so.

Cool, this will probably interest you then. A mate of mine built 2 little run around tractors, one from an LJ80 and one from a very early 1 litre Sierra. I've only got pics of the LJ80 one put I'l get some pics of the clutch setup on the Sierra one tomorrow. Whilst the fact that he built tractors out of them doesn't interest you, the fact he used industrial engines to power them probably does.
To get drive to the original gearbox, he cut the bellhousing part off (with a hack saw, no less) then ground the clutch shaft down with an angle grinder until it was the right size to fit a pulley he had. He then cut a keyway (again, with the angle grinder) and fitted the pulley, he mounted the engine up and uses a simple pulley tensioner clutch.
He's got the pulley's set up so there's about a 2.5:1 reduction so this thing has feck loads of torque even just with the 8HP Honda, it'l pull anything (even wheelies! ). It quite easily gets to max revs in top gear high range (30-40km/h, it's fucking scary on that thing though ) so your Yanmar should perform reasonably well, remembering this little tractor would weigh less than half what your tray back does.
I think a better set up would be a centrifugal clutch on the engine with about 2:1 reduction chain drive down to the gearbox. Centrifugal clutches for an engine like yours are pretty pricey though.
If you do end up doing the conversion, please document it on here!
Thanks
Hayden

You can't take the bellhousing off one of these motors, it's cast into the body of the trans.
The yanmar will probably just have the standard 4 bolt industrial engine pattern so it you were doing it properly (unlike my dodgey friend ) you would make a plate that bolts to that and also to the bell housing, then make a boss so you can bolt the F10a flywheel and clutch to the yanmar, this boss would also house the spigot bearing (my mate used a pillow block in place of that).
Pretty simple hey?

Hey,
The yanmar has no bellhousing on it at all, its brandnew. It has the flywheeel attached. So I would really like to use the suzy bellhousing on the 4 speed if at all possible. I can most likely make an adaptor to get the shaft length right and I will turn up a spigot bush out of bushing bronze to suit the imput shaft and the yanmar flywheel/crankshaft size. The starter motor is already attached to the backing plate on the yanmar. I just need to fit an alternator and brackets and plumb the hoses from the water pump and head to the suzy radiator. There is heaps of room to play with. The honda conversion is super rough, but hey it works lol apparently. I wonder if the honda motor beast is using the standard gearbox, transfer case and 4.11 diff. The yanmar uses half a liter of diesel an hour at 3600 rpm(14 hp). The f10a is 45 hp (i think) at 5,500 rpm. So obviously the trayback would never do 120kms per hour ever again. But that does not matter. Most work is done at maximum of 60 kph and a lot lower than that.

I just remenbered another I saw in the Phillipines a couple of years ago. It was a suzuki hardtop with a 3 cylinder 4 stroke suzy motor in it. 600cc from memory and it was turbo charged. Factory setup not a conversion. The store owner said it got along very well for the size of the motor. I asked to look it because of the turbo sticker on the back of the hardtop! So maybe I can get a small turbo for the yanmar at a later date and up the hp a bit, intercooler and maybe some no2, oops did I say that out loud? Just joking! At the worst I will think about some crawler gears if I can find them the right ratio and price. Ie not super low for rock crawling:)

i think a couple of people here in auszookers have that 660cc turbo motor. suppose to be an improvement over a stock 1.3l

did i for get to copy and paste the engine model?
Kubota D722-E3B engine
did a quick google and Kubota USA
They have a 3200rpm model (14.5hp) and a 3600rpm model (20hp)
They don't give any torque figures but it could be worked out mathematically

Did a quick google:
T = HP * 5252 / RPM
14.5hp @ 3200rpm = 23.8 foot pounds
20hp @ 3600 = 29.2 foot pounds
I guess peak torque may be at a lower rpm.

Ok,
So the 3 cylinder kubota motor (smallest one) is about the same hp as the 2 cylinder yanmar. It makes 13.4 hp at 3600 rpm. I would imagine the 3 cylinder would run smoother. But having said that the 5 cylinder mercedes diesels run and rev better than a 6 cylinder diesel. I think it will come down to the cost of each unit.

Seems like a lot of money being invested in a diesel engine and fitting kit along with regearing the car to suit it...
Wouldn't a replacement or rebuilt f8/f10 be a better option.
If it is fuel supplies at the end of the world you are worried about, make it run on wood gas.

Ah, Im setup making biodiesel. Was just be cheaparse. Everything on the property runs on diesel cept for stationarys and chainsaws. 25kva geny is diesel as well. Plus dunno how to do woodgas conversion. I would like steam engine for geny also, but they are expensive to buy 30-50 hp and boiler.
