hey guys
i have just finished building my rear tailgate trim on my sierra that will now house my 6x9s

ive built it out of 10mm mdf and have done my best at designing it withouth any sharp corners. im at the point now were i am about to carpet it.

i got some grey carpet from clark rubber. unfortunatly due to my budget i chose not to go with propper car apolstery carpet but got what i figured would be the next best thing. reasonably thin/ flexible grey carpet. and i bought miles to much of it aswell so at a push i might be able to do all the interior trim pannels out of it (doors and lil rear pannel pieces)

my plan was to prty much just rap it with the carpet with a layer of spray on adhesive first. would it be worth painting the mdf first in an effort to stop the wood absorbing all the glue?

was just chassing some tips/ advice on what to do b4 i start cutting the carpet up

round off all the edges so there is about a 5mm radius, including corners, this will allow the carpet to wrap better. i used a 4" angle grinder on the form ply that i used, rough concrete driveways can be effective on mdf.

you'll find that most spray glue in a can will just soak into the mdf, when i was building my rear drawers i used liquid nails & spread that out using it as a contact adheasive.

i hacked the bottom edge up with the plain (i think thats how u spell it) and then i sanded all the other edges. ive done a bit of a ruff job on the holes but i was tryna do it with as little curve as possible as i though it would be easier to cartpet the strait lines. that has been sanded back aswell. but its not gona be a major problem as it sist inside the speeker spaces.

u say the mdf will suck up the glue. would the easy fix for this be 3 or 4 coates of cheep spray paint before gluing or what (i was prety impressed with the carpet around ur box atari). i have some liquid nails in the shed but i hate using it coz it sticks to everything u dont want it to.
how did u get an even spread when u did it with the liquid nails?

that spray bond i found didn't so shit - i followed the instructions on the can and i ended up throwing it in the bin

use a heavier duty adhesive and spread it on mate

i have anough to part epoxy to make about 3 litres of it in the shed. would that be better than the spray shit? also did u paint first or prime it some how?

liquid nails is like $3 a tube, use a caulking gun to squirt it onto the mdf & spread it out.

get a tin of quick grip or gel grip and follow the instructions or get hold of some 3m spray adhesive to glue it down

also a sharp stanley knife and staple gun for the back, you need to pull it tight and twist it round to make the corners

does your carpet have a backing? you need something unbacked that stretches otherwise it will look shoddy, people keep going to clark rubber for this stuff but they sell useless shit

i have used liquid nails b4 but i always find it hard to get an even film and i dont want my carpoet to be all lumpy haha.

yeah i was working out a formula as to how to calculate whitch questions to ask in order to finish the game with the minimal amount of questions based upon the different physical features each character has. for example most peple begin the game with the question "is it male or female" when in reality the first question should be dose your charcater have facial hair as there is a higher percentage of characters with facial hair than there is women. should the player reply with a yes. you not only are able to remove all the female character but you are also able to remove all the males with out facial hair. leaving u with ten players to choose from
but after figuring my formula. i soon relaised it was some what redundant when playing GUESS WHO with a 4 year old.

Use shoe gue or most kinds of contact. Paint the mdf and the back of the carpet with a layer of it, let it tack off then away you go. Keep the carpet tight when your putting it on. Also leave the carpet in the sun to soften it up.

yes it has a thin stretchy backing will a staple gun be able to staple into the mdf?
we have an air powerd one but idk were the staples are!
alos were would u suggest buying the carpet from. i did consider this point when buying but couldnt find it anywhere except for jacar were they sell it as speeker box carpet. and they not only did not have it on a roll and would only sell it pre cut but they also ask supid prices

that is what i used for the carpet bits on my drawer set up, couldn't find the 3M fast foam spray glue so i used liquid nails instead.

when cutting it out i was just gona lay my pannel upside down on the carpet and leave a 1 1/2 or 2inch border aroun its. will that be enough u recon?

A little off topic guy's, but im keen to put a set of rear draws in and cover them in carpet, but i was wondering, will the carpet just hold water and soak it into the plywood or will it keep it off of the wood?

you want as much spare material as possible so it gives you something to work with & grab without getting glue everywhere, i'd be looking at 3" & trim it back afterwards.

IMO I would look at sealing the wood first with something.

Seal the wood and you will be glueing the carpet to the sealer, use a carpet with out a jute backing backing and it wont hold water, it will be the wood sucking it up. Use marine ply and problem solved

well im glad i checked first. i just finished painting the board with spray paint. and it sucked the first coat up strait away like u guys said. im onto coat 3 now and its been 15 mins and its still not close to being dry. so i recon ill probs do a 4th coat. then ill use that spray glue. and where the carpet overlaps on the back ill run a nice thick bead of luiquid nails. and some staples. those three combined with the speeker spacers on the front should hold it for a while.
its only realy tempory for now.

it came up prety bloody neat haha. i used that full can of spray shit on the front then parked the zook on top of the bored and left it for two hours.

then i pulled the zook of and folded the edges back did a lil trimming then ran shit loads of liquid nails around the edges and hey presto its all done. shall mount it up tomoz and put me pics up for yas
