Might not be same prob but......
mine was doing that till I adjusted tappets and put new cam cover gasket in...
hasn't happened since...purrs like kitten now..
Does it leak from tappet cover at all?
(Bear in mind I could be totally wrong )

The no-idling issue is just a Zook thing, along with leaking/burning oil . A bit like leaking oil in Rover's and Porsches, rust in Toyota's and crap electrics in Mitsubishi's. Zookfan is right though, it is just crap in the carby. If you know what you are doing, you may get away with stripping and cleaning. If you don't then get someone to do it for you.

before you throw money at rebuilding the carby, take the air cleaner off and rev the crap out of the engine. As the engine is revving, put your hand over the top of the air horn on the craby to create a vacuum. Just before the engine sounds like it's going to stall, take you hand off the carby and rev it again. Doing this 3 or 4 times may be enough to dislodge any crap in the carby without the need for a rebuild. If this still does'nt work, then you are up for a rebuild.

Local recarb joint does a rebuild for $250. After paying them once and the same thing happening again I learnt to do it myself. The aircleaner trick can work or if you unscrew the idle solenoid and blast some compressed air in there it can also fix it. Unless you remove the crud it will just make its way back again though. The only permanent solution is EFI (or get REALLY good at heel+toe )
Its a good idea to put another fuel filter between the fuel pump and carby too. This will only cost you a few dollars Always a good option.

the standard cabies are fine, plenty of people fix them properly and look after them and they do everything you could ever wish for.
its the ones that hacks have pulled apart and not paid attention to the little bits or put them back together wrong so they will never work that give them a bad name
I would make yourself familiar with the stock carb, download the manual and have a good look at how it all goes and how the hoses hook up and so on, any carby will have troubles with dirt in a 4wd so you may as well use the one best matched to the engine.

the standard carb is excellent. don't believe everything you read on outers.
No carb will ever reliably cope with the dust / vibration / water / mud / bouncing that happens offroad. Doesn't matter who its made by or what engine its off.

i don't think you'd want to run 2 webers that size i've got a single 32/36 and thats more than enough

Top part of the carby is commonly referred to as an air horn... or at least it was 20 years ago when I did my trade.
Taff and Royce are right. Standard carby is pretty good. When you start playing with webbers and stuff, apart from the fact it no longer meets adr's, you open yourself up to a whole lot of new problems, like running reliably on an incline for example.

got a 32/36 webber on today, the response is amazing acceleration is much better hasnt really done much bout top speed as that mainly depends on gearing anyway i would think. very happy highly reccommend this mod. old one was stuffed, choke was stuffed and throttle shaft. one of dads mates is a mechanic and he said zooks have always had problems he recommends the webbers to.

when your engine isn't running and the ignition is on those lights are meant to be on.

alternator possibly shatting itself?...
but staying on topic..
stock carb here and no issues since learning how it works.. (well enough to get me out of trouble)
keep a car of carbie cleaner behind a headlight for precautions.. and adding a second filter after the pump but beofre the carb. WILL stop the majority of crud from getting into the idle jets.
Also be weary of blowing the compressed air into the chamber to hard as floats may be damaged resulting in further problems!
