do i need a catalytic converter on my 85 model drover? i thought they were only for unleaded engines? obviously i dont have much of an idea on exhaust legalities

Most Japanese cars were unleaded from the mid-70's I thought (even though it wasn't a requirement here til 86). I think if your car was released in Australia running on unleaded then you will require a cat. Not too sure if the f10a was ever released as a leaded engine?

Percussions - Nothing performance-wise but possible fines up to $10k(or more) legally apparently. Big no-no to run cat-less on the street.

All widetracks (88.5 on) ran cats AFAIK.

A cat with no internals is going to be very hard to detect. Unless you get emission tested, which is unlikely up my way at least. Im all for less restriction in my exhausts.

gwagensteve, thanks, i dont remember seeing one when i ripped it out, since chucked all the old exhaust, except for the rusty extractors which are going too, didnt trust my memory, thats good news since the price for a new 2" sports system sans cat is very nice on lowrange, cheers

steve is right, 85 drover never had one and there is no requirement for vehicles to have one if they never came as fitted exquipment. Now if you upgrade to a later model engine that may be a different story.

I don't believe it's cost effective to ship a bulky item that's easy to make here from the US.

yeah i did, steve, master rebuild kit, cam,new rocker set & full exhaust system delivered to my place for $1347.60 got quoted a full exhaust for 900 at one place which was ridiculous & 300 for just a set of extractors at another, so i pretty happy with that price, its in USD too

i've got a 2" pipe setup on mine and run a commodore cat on it... theyre cheap as chips to buy nowadays i believe mine was around $120-150 installed?

the consensus is i dont need a cat as my car didnt come out with one, i tried a couple of exhaust places they all said it was a custom job as their suppliers dont have an off the shelf system for sierra/drover & then they try to charge me big $$$ & i laugh at em and walk, the average price for extractors was 300-500, the whole system is 399 USD from lowrange, delivered to me is 518.90

I pay'd about 200 bucks for my extractors. fitted them myself then drove to the exhust shop (fuck it was loud ) Then for a 1" & 3/4 with a hot system fitted to the extractors was only $180 ($80 worth of pipe and bending and $100 for the hotdog). Why the hell would you buy it from the states? $1300 seems a SHITLOAD of money for an 85 drover, i mean, thats what you'd pay for the whole car

good deal for you mate, if you read my post i have been around to a few places and thats the prices i got quoted, 1300 is for a full 2" exhaust, extractors, a cam, a master rebuild kit with hc pistons & a new set of rockers, to me that seems like not a bad price delivered, and lots of cars going around would have had the same money spent again on what they are worth on wheels, gearing & suspension alone

I got extractors for $200 from MPH headers and a full 2" system from a local exhaust shop for $230 from memory.

stockman, thanks will look em up on the web, greg i know, i was in an exhaust shop today which quoted me 560 for extractors on their own!!!! i literally laughed at the guy, then he told me it was 365 for a 2 inch system, fuck that i will buy from the states if all the exhaust joints are gonna charge like that, if you buy enough in one go it makes the shipping worth it, i exchanged it to AUD and it worked out to be 1275 for the exhaust, a cam, a master rebuild kit with hc pistons, new rockers which i thought wasnt too bad

when you add all that up it's good value for money considering it lands on your doorstep & to not have to deal with retarded exhaust shops would be a bonus by the sounds of it.

Last time I was thinking about buying something from the states, once I added in the 10% it ruined the deal completely.

Every time I've had one done, I've had it custom made.

A prefab one is just arse most of the time, the swb pajero was the best example. I wish I had pics of it as it was a work of art compared to stock.
The only reason it was so good though was because I stood there in the shop with the guy and told him exactly what I wanted, and watched him do it and made him do better bits I wasn't happy with. I looked through his books and chose the muffler based on getting one the exact right length with the perfect offset outlet so that it fit up under the body and kicked out up over the rear axel so there were no unnecessary bends, and still hugged the chassis.
That one cost $380 including the extractors.

Though I'm sure the lowrange ones are probably way better that average,

Personally I would keep shopping around if I were you.
Nowadays I would probably make my own!

my coily came with a commodore cat, i kept the cat and put a new 2'' exhaust in and got my extractors bent away from the chassis rail at the sane time and the lot cost me $240 and he did a ripper job!
