You can do it, though a lot of people won't recommend it due to their experience doing the same thing.

so does it bend the tailgate etc or can you get away with it. at the moment i just strap it inside but takes up all the back and i need to pu other stuff in

if your just driving around town it should be right. I wouldn't put it there on a bumpy offroad track. My hardtops rear door ended up with a tear in it from a small tyre (235/75R15) and a friend had bent hinges on his tailgate from a 33.

mmm yea i dont think ill bother then. does anyone make rear bars with swing aways for sierra's? if not ill make up a backet for in the back

standard tailgate can't handle the weight of the standard spare let alone a 31. Tends to crack the body around the hinges. It's just starting to happen with mine now and it's got the standard spare on it. I need to put a 31" spare on mine and was either planning to build a rear bar with swing mount on it or build an exo cage and mount it on the roof.

6 years in my softop with a 31 on the back, no problems at all

its one of those suspension things, if you run the bone bone jarring shit thats forced apon us then things will break, soften it up and things last longer

Just use 50 x 50 x 6 angle on top and use a piece of 3mm down the tailgate as strength and redrill the holes to suit and use some longer bolts

or just make a bar design using a trailer stub axle and bearings ( best idea ever) and hang it from somewhere secure on the back

I heard a story about a stub axle setup breaking off and bouncing down the road! I wonder if it was a cast stub, and when it was welded into the bumper it cracked?

Another option if you have a soft top. Make some brackets on the inside and bolt the tailgate shut.
