6" wide will fit over the brakes.
simex side walls are very siff from what i hear.
sliverstones are a bit more forgiving and cheaper
maxxis are cheap and soft tread almost like stickys

I don't think a 6" rim would even have the space for the zook stud pattern!

you left out what terrain you're driving and what speed you're doing.

also, why a 6" rim and not a 7" ??? 7" would open you up to more (larger) sizes.

otherwise, if you're fixed on a 6" rim look at 7.00x16 tyres (means getting a 16x6" rim).

but we still cant recommend a tyre if you don't say what you're driving on.

you can get bigger tyres, its the width that it affects. so the most you'll squeeze on is a 9.5" Wide tyre. im pretty sure Procomp make a 32" x 9.5" R15

what would such a narrow tire be good for?
i think of the idea pretty often, but i imagine a tire of smaller width may not bag as well when at low pressure and may cut deep into soft mud and bog as the surface area is not spread out.....
but they look so cool.
what are the benefits?

the way i think of tyres is like a tank:
Image

you want a long footprint, not a wide one... so a tall tyre aired down gets very long but not too wide, giving you lots of the tread pattern on the ground. this also means the weight of the car is spread over a long skinny area giving more "bite". a wider tread tends not to spread as far length wise when airing down, and so doesnt give the same effect.

theres better explanations online with images and testing and junk, but i can't for the life of me find it now.

EDIT: found something close to what i base this on: http://www.expeditionswest.com/research ... _rev1.html

Less width = a better width/height ratio.
Superior drivability in all conditions than a wider tyre - longer, narrower footprints work better than wider, shorter ones.

A narrower tyre has massively better performance on slick but firm surfaces like clay.

As for comp tyres on 6" rims -

'pede in a 32X9.5 - 15 or 16"
swamper 32X9, 34X9 - 15 or 16"

7.00 (30"), 7.50 (31"), 8.25 (33"), 9.00X16 (35-36"), in any number of mine service type patterns, but all with high load ratings and stiff construction.

I can appreciate what you are trying to say, but a tank is a terrible example. Within about 2 or 3 years of that tank photo you posted (the vehicle is an M3 General Lee derivative); the yanks were making tanks with much much wider tracks to lower ground pressure so the heaps of junk didn't get stuck as often (The Lee's/Grant's and Early VVSS Shermans were pretty poor performers from what I have read).

The Germans in WWII even went to the extent of supplying all Tiger 1's and 2's with 2 sets of tracks each. A skinny set so the oversize monstrosities could fit on a railway cart (with the outer row of road wheels removed also), and a massively wide set (200mm wider a side) to put on the tank for use, so it didn't get bogged every 35 seconds.
If you look on this page, there is a few pictures of Ausf H/E models with narrow tracks and combat tracks, and one with the narrow tracks but full set of road wheels.
http://www.achtungpanzer.com/panzerkamp ... fz-181.htm

Also I think the means by which a tracked vehicle steers means it doesn't benefit from the narrow wheels in the same way a tyred vehicle can in respect to better bite for steering.

For a bit of a laugh, the ultimate in wide tracks for lowering ground pressure in a tank. Porsche's Maus (mousy).....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_VIII_Maus

Anyway..... we still don't know what diameter wheels this bloke actually wants to use!!!

Tank tracks are still relatively narrow though (much narrower than they are long).

You don't see tanks looking like this, thats for sure:

wet rock and mud are two total opposites mate =)

i'd suggest KL71 or KM2 as i drive both those terrains and so far these 2 tyres are the best i've had on those surfaces. downside is neither come in a tall and skinny size that would suit those rims.

previously i've had cooper STTs and simex ETs..

Seeing as I've spoken so much shit in this thread I better say something remotely useful.....

235/75R15, or 30x9.5R15's would both be very happy on a 15x6. Not really big tyres, but about as big as you'll get away with on a mildish Sierra. You may get away with a 31x10.5, but only if its a skinnier one (like the Silverstone extremes I had, which were rather narrow for the 7's I had them on). You can get a few tyres in a 32x9.5-15. That would be about it I'd say.

Desired tread pattern and size don't always match up, so you may have to make a compromise on one of the 2.

Personally my pick to suit your requirements would be a BFG KM2 in a 30x9.5R15. It will be big enough for your car without excessive reworking (ie clearance off of just about everything), they grip well in most situations, and will be happy on 15x6's. Failing that maybe a Maxxis Trepadore in a 235/75R15.

Or them too :)

I actually didn't think they made them in a 30, but I just checked, and their website says they do.

I run 31x10.5R15 Firestones on both my Sierra and LJ80. I wouldn't put those particular tyres on a 6" wide rim though. 7" seems ideal for them, 8" still seems to work. If you want bigger tyres, budget some new rims into it, and get a pair that work well together.

WRT the comments above about skinny tyres. I wouldn't stress about anything from around a 6" through to a 10.5" wide tyre (I've seen Sierra's on 6.00-16 bartreads and on 33x12.5's, and the tyre's width has never been the cars biggest issue). The car will still perform well if the car compliments the tyres accordingly. Something like a 31x13.5 would probably be rather dumb though

I wouldn't consider any radial except a Krawler as a "comp" (i.e 100% offroad) tyre, and I'm not even 100% convinced about Krawlers. Their road and rut performance is excellent, but they struggle where their width is a disadvantage. I've heard grooving them helps though.

Crossply tyres are so massively superior offroad it's not funny. Even more so on a light car like a sierra that struggles to flex its tread.

Radial mud tyres are what should be called "All Terrain" tyres in my opinion. They are NOT off road tyres.
