Hello I have been slowly rebuilding my 1991 Vitara JLX 16a. With some help I replaced the clutch as the old one had been destroyed by the previous owner. Now there is a lot of travel in the clutch pedal. I think I need to adjust the clutch cable. My question is where should the adjustment be? The cable comes back to a slot with two nuts on that can be adjusted and then at the terminal end of the cable there is another adjustable nut. Can anyone tell me what each of these nuts adjust and where they should be in relation to each other? Which do I adjust first? I've tried all sorts of combinations but still have lots of freeplay? The nut to adjust is the external arm on gearbox. It is a 14mm from memory and will have threaded rod through it. Tighten to take up the slack.

Thank you. I have been fiddling with the 14 mm nut as described. I wound all one way then back the other neither seemed to make a difference could the cable be stretched or kaput?

best thing to do is wind the nut on the end of the cable onto about halfway along its threaded bit, then adjsut the nuts on the mount at the engine so there is very little free play between the 14mm nut and the clutch arm

then fine tune it using the 14mm nut, you want some freeplay between the 14mm nut and the arm (maybe 3mm) but loosen it to make the clutch work closer to teh floor, tighter to make it work higher up, but still keeping the freeplay otherwise the throwout bearing will wear out quick
