Hey guys - my starter appears to keep turning after i've got ignition... only for a second but its annoying... so it spins up, engine starts and then it keeps spinning going "whirrrrrrr" for a second before disengaging.

is it as simple as blasting some inox into the starter motor or am i missing something here?

its usually a pull apart and regrease kind of thing.. easy to do.

is it the reduction stule starter or the big body one??

The Sierra (if thats what it is) Starter motors have a one way mech bulit into the gear that engages with the flywheel. It works like your socket wrench, locks in when it spins one way and free spins the other way.
It could be this bit playing up and sticking on so that where the engine kicks in its taking the starter motor with it. I think a new gear is about $30 from the auto elec.
Could be other things causing it to but thats my guess.

the starter it only about 3 months old, it the full size one not a reduction.

might give suzistore a shout and see what they think seeing as they fitted it =)

Mine did this after I drowned my car... It's to do with the spring in the solenoid sticking because of dirt and stuff in it... The was a thread on another forum but I can't find it... Oh and mine burnt out in the end so don't run it too long... Hope this helps

Give em you credit card for a 30min home job? Id just pull it down, remove the shit that's bound to have gotten in there, lube it(PTFE in the solinoid) and see if it works. There really simple when you pull them apart..

nar it had to be ground down to fit cos i've got a 1.6 and they were out of reduction starters, so it was better that they did it! lol

Easy stuff Alien.

Removed the starter, pull the arse end off it-4 long screws.

Lube the back shaft collar while your there and also the front shaft with ptfe lube or spray grease. Work the Gear back and forward on it's shaft to get the shit free'd up.

Install motor end bell with care taken on the brushes. The brushes are at 0-3-9 on the clock. Insert shaft pointing at 6 and once it hits the back case push up towards 0 and in to seat it in the collar. Once you've done this a couple of time it's not an issue.
On the solinoid lube the throwout arms and pivot point.

Best do this yourself as it will be a yearly excersise if you do much mudding.

When lubing her up make an effort not to get any on the brushes or the commutator(the gold part the brushes sit on).

Mine made a bad noise for a second (sticks) but mine was cause the minimal movement you get out of the bolt holes is enough to make it to tight on the fly wheel is I moved it all the way out and that fixed it

mine does the same thing started doing it after a muddy 4wd trip, havent fixed it though
