EFS make good ones too.

was more chasing, second hand stuff. aim is a two inch lift, new shock, springs, and bushes for under 500. am looking at the comonwhore, hiace shock set up. im told that the springs outa some mazda wagon are good but unsure as to what sorta lift ya get. possibly thinking of stock rears in the front, and mazda in the rear with the cheepo shock set up.... when i work out if ima keep my vit or keep my sierra ill do a half decent set up on the sierra (if i keep it)

What are you trying to acheive with the lift?
Alot of those hybrid spring packs are suck it and see in terms of lift. You never know when stealing springs from an old car what they have been through or how often they have been played with.
I think bluesuzy? maybe? played with them quite a bit

basically i want a half decent lift to comfortably get some bigger tyres in under the guards.
my front springs just about curl backwards and are desperatly in need of replacing, but as i just bought a unlicend vitara witch in ideal circumstances will become the daily driver and the sierra will become well idk yet. but as it is gona take a few months to get the vit licensed and going right the sierra is gona be the little hack around thing that i can pull some hours in ( im on my Ls). obviously the vit is gona be pulling on the wallet so i wanna get the sierra susspension done asap and cheaply. asap because the sooner its going the sooner i get my license.

you wont fit any other spring in without modifying the mounts in some way... 323 or hilux leaves still need relocation of the mounts.
personally, go RUF all round and do a guard chop.

Its not hard but it time consuming to get it done right the first time. You will need to be handy with the grinder, welder and measuring tape.

Spring lift alone does not give tyre clearance... Think about it, when you are off road and flexing, what stopping your axle from moving upwards just as much as it could before?

Depends. some springs move the axle= no rubbing. Some are stiff enough that they don't allow enough uptravel for rub to occur

With enough load, they'll go up to the bumptstops....
And if you move the diff, its still most likely to rub on something at full upwards flex...

Extend the bumpstops the required amount for the tyre size.
If you want to go cheap on the sierra while you fix up the vitara. Why not just get some better rubber and bash around stock? Sierras are still a capable 4wd stock.

My old hard top had worse springs and still went to some places it shouldn't have.
I'm sure someone somewhere has some better nick front springs they'd give you for some beer.

ruf is easy just to use boomerang shackles, tailshaft spacer and you will probably need extended brake lines with the extra flex and lift.
You can redrill the spring perch back 10-15mm to suit but its not a necessity. Your shackle angle will be fine with the boomerang shackles but not with straight ones.
ruf with decent shocks is the best mod you can do to a sierra comfort wise and has the added bonus of providing a heap more flex as well.

So what do you call bigger rubber? 29's? 31s? 33s?
I test fitted some 31" silverstone extreme's to my stock hardtop the other day. with bump stop extensions and some trimming of the gaurds should come very very close to fitting. Regardless of the lift if I want any travel I will still probably need to clean up the seams in the gaurds and take some metal out.
Dont even think about the RUF until you understand how it will effect your car and handling, and why you are actually doing it.
Edit: just re-read your post. Why is the sierra holding you back getting your P's?

thought i would revive my old suspension thread.
things have settled down and the vit is gone. long story short. ive decided on the Gabriel set up with commy/ hiace shocks. and have scored (will be scoring) some west coast suspension springs brand new for a cheep price each. with a 3 inch lift on them.
will the commy/ Hiace set up with the shocks be alright with a 3 or 4 inch lift or do i need to look at something different. and will the steering set up be alright or will it require a high steer
and im guessing that with extended bump stops and the above lift it will cope with the 235s quite sufficiently?
cheers
Troy

Why 3-4" lift? And you said you wanted comfortable.. 3-4" lifted springs won't be comfortable.
But you could fit 235's with no lift and bumpstop spacing. So that amount will be fine, but very unnecessary.
It depends on how much down travel you will have as to whether the shocks will work.

Where/how are you getting those for that much?
EDIT. Looking through their catalogue, they have front springs with 125mm of camber, that's about a 6" lift over what I have now!

im getting them through a freind. there 3 inch lifed. and im half thinking about putting some extended shackles on it aswell. i know that i wont need that much hight but most of my mates have big 4wds so i dont wanna be getting hung up heaps thats all.
yeah im not so concerned about comfort atm i just want the height realy. comfort isnt realy the max prioriy atm ill do decent susspension when im richer.
cheers for the help boys

Height doesn't mean you'll go everywhere. Diff clearance and large diameter tyres help alot more.

You can't have it all
You either choose:
Static Height
or
Comfort and flex.
Take your pick

This makes less than no sense.
Suspension lift won't increase diff clearance, and that's where you are going to get stuck. Sierras have such a short wheelbase that you won't be getting bellied out where the "big" cars do.
No comfort=stiff springs=no flex=less capability. Tall stiff cars are ghey. You'll bounce all over the place and that means you are loosing traction and directional control. A stiff car isn't even as stable.
Take your 3" springs and pull leaves until you end up at 1.5" or so of lift and enjoy some flex. Use longer shackles if your stock shackles aren't long enough to provide full travel from your longer than stock springs, otherwise, there's no point running them.
Just because you don't want to spend big doesn't mean your suspension can't work.
Steve.

im gona start with height and play with it until i like it.
that was the plan btw gwagensteve. to just get the big cheep springs. ensure i have enough clearance for my 235s and then drop some shackles on and pull some springs. what is the best way to go wit extended shackles are the boomerang ones the go or are the normal just as good?

You really need to read and learn some more mate.
First of all you will be able to clearing the tires is negligible from any such spring lift, because a spring lift is only a static lift. Meaning it only raised the car at ride height. The wheel/tire will still have the same maximum up-travel as the stock spring setup if the bumpstops haven't been touched and the springs are soft enough to actually travel all the way up to the bumpstop.
With 235's all that is required is a bit of guard massaging and some trimming of the bumper outriggers to get them to fit, irrespective of what springs you are using unless the centerbolt spacing is such that to tire rubs the firewall. In that case you would also redrill the spring perch.
Secondly, throwing on extended shackles to otherwise standard off the shelf lifted (unless they are super long) or stock length springs will increase the possibility and bending and destroying leafs, unless you space the bumpstop adequately to reduce the amount that the spring inverts. In effect you could end up with slightly higher static height, with minimal possible gain in flex, reduced castor and a car that handles like a turd escaping the next morning after a heavy night's drinking.
Overall barely anything to gain, many things to loose, not worth it IMO. Drop shackles, I thing you can search for that one yourself.....
Have a look at the members rigs on here that actually get away from the web wheeling and actually use their vehicles for the intended purpose and figure out how the set it up. You will be surprised how far a sierra with 235's and descent off the shelf after-market suspension that works well will go! That's provided you can actually drive and pick descent lines.
