Hi,
I'm looking to buy a Sierra with an Engine thats done 250,000km's and was just wandering how hard the 1.3L are to rebuild. Also if anyone has done it how much it cost.

depends what you want to do to it really
can range from a couple hundred to thousands.

lowrange has a basic rebuild kit for aound 200 bucks, taiwanese gaskets but its nice and cheap, havent put it all back together but my mate who is a mechanic and kinda supervising me says its easy as

Really basic rebuild, not looking to alter the engine just make it run like new and for a long time.

"really basic". Well it's kind of not like that. You pull an engine down, you measure everything up against the manual. Then correct what's wrong. Problem is it's hard to know what's going to need attention before you start. Thats typically why change over engines cost so much. You can always do what a lot do, and just slap new rings and bearings in to help it along, but that never lasts too long if the bores etc are worn.

Might look for something with less km's then. Spend more on the car now and less on the engine later. Thats the plan anyway.

How many Km's do you get out of a 1.3l on average?

LOL Very funnny!!!! What do you mean by lots. If I was to buy one with 200 - 300,000km's on it would it still be ok. It just seems alot of km's for such a small 4 cylinder engine.

My 1.3 has 230,000 on it and is starting to use oil i have only done 15,000 since i have owned it, i'm pretty hard on my cars but always service every 5000km so depends on previos life of the engine and previous service history

hahaha mine has about 250000 was starting to use oil, rebuilding it now, i reckon if the price was right & the rest of the car was ok i would prob buy it, mine was 1700 in gay bay with 6 mthr rego & new tyres

You could consider a gem engine, but I think there about $1200.

Totally agree with the above statement.
Im just doing a rebuild on the GTi engine that has done 250,000km and 'looking' at it once it was appart.....all seemed well until i spoke to the machinist. He measured the bores for the pistons and the holes are not round but more oval which means he will need to machine the block 0.20thou which means new rings and pistons.
If i were to have just slapped a standard set of rings and honed the block i would have the same problem in the next 20-30,000km so may as well do it right the first time.
On the other hand, i've got a sierra engine that's done over 330,000km that does not blow smoke or loose oil (compression is still ok for the amount of km)
Granted it was a diesel I had a 99 Hilux that done well over 440,000km without a rebuild...regular 5,000km oil/filter change though. Saw it a few months ago and the new owner is still driving it
I personally believe it all comes down to previous service and not how many km the engine has done

Gathering from what you're wanting to do im assuming it is going to be your daily. I would presonally look for one that has decent body and interior. I highly doiubt that you will find a sierra that has less than 200,000km.
If the body/suspension etc are in good condition, i would be inclined to buy the car. If it's not smoking really bad and only using abit of oil, the engine can last you for quite a few months especially if you use that 'engine honey'. It's not a permanent solution but will get you through til you save up some more money.
Good luck whichever way you go but a very good saying i once heard was......
