Morning AZ Crew,

I'm in the process of reconstructing some CV's for my Vitara & I have 2 CV assemblies one with a broken inner CV & the other with a broken outer CV.

Just wondering how I separate the outer cup & stub from the cage & half shaft?

I've had the inner joints apart before & it's just a matter of removing the snap ring to get the cup to separate from the cage & balls, I've cleaned up the outer CV & there is no snap ring holding the lot together like the inners.

Anyone got some tips on how to disassemble the outers without damaging them or is it just a case of smacking them apart with a soft blow hammer?

I tried slamming my Samurai ones down into a long piece of2 inch diam tubing to try to shock them out. In the end the mechanic used a couple of blows with a soft edged cut off wheel (the only soft bit was the paint on the edge of the cutting wheel)

pull the inner cv off so you can remove all teh boots
stick the shaft in a STURDY vice
get a brass or copper drift and stick it against the back of the inner CV spider part

hit it VERY HARD with a BIG HAMMER, it will compress the little clip that holds it onto the shaft and fall off the edge (have something to catch it if you dont want it damaged)

big hammer and hard are the key here, dont fluff around

Otherwise a driveshaft shop will stick it in a special machine and pop it off

i got impatient waiting for someone to reply

cleaned it all up & gave it a bit of hammer time as described by Royce & off it came, it's the same size & style of spring clip thingo as what is on the end of the front RHS stub axle & the LHS axle where it locates in the diff centre.

man i hate the smell of molly grease & CV's on a saturday morning.

Trying to change my outer CV but can't get it off? I think the thing that goes onto the splines holds it on? How do I get that off?

Never pulled a vitara front end apart. But, have you taken the circlip off in the locking hub/drive flange? (If vitaras use a circlip)

Usually with a large hammer.

I suspect the "thing that goes onto the splines" is the inner race - it will have a circlip that sits in a groove near the end of the splines - hold the shaft in a vice with the CV down and strike the back of the joint with a heavy dead blow hammer.
