So I got sick of the "AUTO freewheel whenever I feel like it hubs"
So I got some of the way cool WARN jobbies...

They're HUGE compared to standard, these photos dont really portray it properly.

Don't be a dickhead like me and put your wheel back on with the plastic insert still in place

Avm are rebuildable, but they are shut house quality, got them on the paj and they are crap

Yeah I'd heard AVMs were shite so I steared clear of them. These WARN ones seem reasonable. I guess only time will tell, and since I don't have an engine yet, it's not going to be that soon

The only difference I have really found is that my superwinch hubs are shorter, and stay immaculate clean on the inside, even after mud.

I had a wheel bearing problem, so one side got a superwinch hub, and the other an Asin. I took them apart this summer and was pretty shocked at the difference. However I do not like the hub cover bolts in the SW hubs, they are too small and strip too easy.

IMHO the super winch are sealed better than factory aisin, let me see fi I can dig up a pic of when I went to inspect them.

the vitara aisin hubs run a recessed O-ring on the hub mating surface & stay super clean.

The warns look the goods. I'm running just the factory Vit ones these days (with a bit of blue paint added for +40 horsepower).

Did the warns come with new bolts? If my memory serves me right the auto hubs don't have the spiffy cone washers that the manual hubs come with, which is why my beautiful superwinch hub went walkies. If you don't have the cone washers I'd recommend loctite and checking them often.

Nar no new bolts, but they came with split washers to put under them. Personally I think this by itself is a shit solution because it reduces the depth the bolts go into the thread by a couple of mm. So I've just loctited them in. Loctite is good stuff.

When you say walkies, do you mean they came loose or some prick stole them? This worries me a little since you'd only need an alen key and 5 min to take them.

Warn hubs, and the old AVM's (which were licensed from Warn) absolutely shit all over Aisin hubs.


Many Aisins have been put in the bin. I'm yet to put a Warn one in the bin.

One of my superwinches fell off on a road trip just a few weeks after I had fitted them. Didn't notice anything wrong when I unlocked the hubs, when I stopped again a few 100km later and the passenger side one was gone. On the positive side I have a shiny new superwinch hub as a spare now haha

I also used split washers and loctite for a little while but found the farkin things were still working loose after a few trips. Since acquiring some of the cone washers I haven't had anymore issues.

A bolt/washer combo is like $12 a pop brand new, so unless you are made of money I'd recommend you try and snaffle some from a wreckers at some point

Indeed, which is why I was over the frikkin moon when I got my new (old) factory hubs with bolts/washers included for $30.

don't tell me the avm's are crap i just put a set on cause my aisin one seized up and i had a set of older avm's sitting there they feel really smooth operation compared to the aisin ill get round to pulling the aisin ones apart and servicing them one day

I know most of the comp guys over here replace the AVM hubs with Aisin ones, as the AVM's dont hold up once you go 37's or bigger tyres.

Bit of a grave dig... I'm thinking of upgrading my hubs.
Now lowrange have a few options these days.
Mile Marker, Superwinch and Warn.
The warn hubs are dearest...
Just wanted to put it out there and see what you dudes think is the best option...

Stock Aisin.

I see no problem with the Aisin hubs. If they are kept clean they function reliably, and they are stronger than the hub bolts which is all you could ask for.

For those that are concerned about mud getting past the free wheeling hubs, what about the great big seal on the inside of the wheel hub against the spindle? When was the last time you pulled the wheel hub off and checked how much junk was in the inner wheel bearing?

Drive water and mud=servicing moving items.

Avm's & Warn's need the bolt's tightened on a regular basis, they have no cone washer's, just another reason I don't like em......

Just my opinion tho.

...Which allows the hub bolts to be upgraded to 3/8" or 10mm, thereby guaranteeing that the next thing that breaks will be expensive/hard to fix trackside, like a Ring & Pinion.

I think there is a case to try Unbrako's with the stock cone washers, or toyota style studs with cone washers though - which can be done with Aisin hubs, but I'm not sure upgrading to 10mm bolts is a good idea.

I'm running unbrako's on my rear floater with no cone washers (drive flanges have no provision for cone washers) and have had no problems with breakage *touches wood*
