one of my mates has given me his gearbox for my wt leafy and i was just wondering is there any little tricks i should know before trying to swap it into my car? they are both standard 5 speed sierra boxes but his is just from a coily?? is that ok and what should i know? im doing it on my own and i only have a trolly jack to get it down and back?? cheers

Is yours stuffed?

A very handy tool is a clutch aligner, or you can use a broom handle cut down.

Just eyeball both gearboxes to check for any external differences. I'm certainly no guru but I understand there are different gearboxes. Also different clutches too, just to make life interesting

i have pulled both gear boxes out and the only external difference i can see is that my leafy box has three sensors on the top and a short yoke, and the coily one has only two sensors and a longer yoke??? can anyone explain what the extra sensor is for and im assuming the yoke difference is because the xcase differences? are the different yokes interchangeable... cheers jamie

does the leaf box have a bung on the side for the timing marks?

I cant remember what box has how many switches but 1 is reverse and the others are 4th and 5th gear for the EGR

the other main differences can be the number of splines on the input and the throwout bearing

im not sure il have to check tommorow.. with the sensors will it matter if ther is one missing? cos the coily box only has 2? (what is EGR by the way), and if the splines and input bearings are different is it a hard change over to swap them around?? cheers

na it just wont work, EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, probably doesnt work already anyway

worst case get a stepped flywheel and a coily clutch and bung it all in

Too right, many moons ago when I used to work in a car workshop, testing the EGR's was a part of a major service and from memory about 90% of them did'nt work

the new gearbox is in and i plugged in what i could..
all seems to work fine with much nicer shifting. still not happy with where the clutch is engaging but i will stuff around with the adjuster.. yet to take it for a good drive but only time will tell! thanks again for your help all, it made the process much easier! cheers jamie
