I was wanting to do a 2 inch lift on my 2004 jimny and was wondering if i need anything else besides bigger springs. like do i need bigger shocks or to extend the brake lines, anything like that.

Shocks yes, extended brake lines no. It's a pretty straight forward mod to do :)

Oh yeah.

Definitely need some longer shocks, stock shocks will "top-out" often.

Serious questions, I'm not just being a stirrer:

A) How much longer are the longer shocks required for a 2" lift on a Jimny? Does anyone have side by side photos?

B) Does anybody know the difference in compressed length between a standard jimny shock and a "2" lifted" jimny shock?

Now for (a little bit of) stirring, and htis is not targeted at anyone in particular or the contributors to this thread.

I read over and over and over that longer shocks are a requirement of lifted springs, but I practically never see any information about how much longer they are and ESPECIALLY how much longer they are compressed.

Whilst it is possible to "use up" some factory tolerance by fitting some shocks that are slightly longer compressed than stock, it might net 35mm (maybe) of extra shaft travel, now that is a bit, I'll grant you, and better than nothing, but it's not really going to transform the car.

Can anyone post actual figures for compressed and extend lengths VS stock of any "lifted" shock replacements for Jimnys?

I'm not talking about shocks that require reworked mounts or bumpstop spacing. I know exactly what's required to fit a genuinely longer than stock shock to a car, I just want to know what is meant by "shocks for a 2" lift" because that's not clear to me at all.

If anyone really wanted to engineer a longer bolt in shock replacement for, say, a jimny, they'd look at something like a 5100 series Bilstein. By moving the floating piston into the reservior, it's possible to add about 30mm of travel compared to a conventional twin-tube shock. That's a lot, and might allow twice the travel increase of a conventional "lifted shock"* fitment.

I put "lifted shock" in rabbit ears because I'm suspicious that some "lifted shocks" aren't actually any longer - in fact it's common for cars with small. bolt on suspension lifts to have [i]less[/] articualtion than stock.

PS I'm not looking for an argument, I'm interested in actual data. I know a car with aftermarket shocks will handle better etc.

I will get some pics of a "standard" jimny shock-next to a 80mm TD shock...i don't think there is much difference in compressed length...

Gwagensteve, I'd never just accept a shock because someone told me they are correct for my lift. I think you are right when it comes to less/same travel after the lift. I like to measure extended length and compressed length of the stock shock and find a shock that extends as far as possible while still giving as close to or more compression than the stock unit.

As for Jimny shocks the stock shocks when used with a two inch lift have about 10mm of extension left so they need to be at least 2" longer to avoid topping out on every rebound off a pothole. I'd hazzard a guess and say that a lot of kit shocks are the right extended length but compression is also 2" longer than stock so of course there will be no articulation gains, just more ground clearance.

All that said, I don't have any comparison specs.

Old man emu are quite soft, nice offroad, little bit too much roll in them on road though, and will sag in the front with a bullbar and or winch... I'm getting the 40mm tough dog springs from dank when he gets back to me so I'll let you know how they compare when they're in :)

It depends if your running your jimny with the swaybar in or out. I run my jimny with no swaybar and it flexes great but the brake lines were very very tight!

So i would say if you are planning on running sway bar then you wont need extended breaklines. But if you plan on taking it out just flex it up at full flex and check the brakelines..

I know!!! The 40mm 'winch rated' springs from the TD lift with 40mm springs in the rear will still mean your noise will be down  Vermin of here runs 40mm springs in the rear with 60mm springs up front and the car sit level. No need for longer shocks even with the 60mm springs in the front and 40's in the rear :helloo:

Was it a huge amount? I don't mind a little bit of a pitch as I'll be carrying a fair bit of weight in the back at times, only changing thE current ones because it bottoms out sometimes at the moment with the softer springs

Part of me wants to tell you you're crazy lol... You do realize that if I get the 60mm springs for the front and it's wrong, I'm gonna drive all the way to wa looking at the sky, and I'll mount you to my bonnet as some extra weight to compensate ;)

I had 80mm springs all round...went to 80.. HD springs....no height in crease....30mm spacer's it sits level

Whats the difference between HD and normal? Is it worth going for a 3" lift or 2" susp 2" body?

No to a body lift unless your going to run 33s

So I put my TD springs in this arvo... And yes monkey you were right... Well it still Sita a little higher in the back, about 10mm but it should settle fine.

Took it for a quick drive, didn't seem much harder than the OME springs I had in there previously.

Gee77... If you want some 40mm springs in the cheap pm me... Otherwise they'll be on the forsale page by Friday :)

Haha!

Na it's not a huge amount of difference except for the pitching is gone... I don't have anywhere that's flat enough to take pics atm

Bump.

has anyone done the measurements / data?

I am in the similar situation where i am looking for a longer shock... because of topping out... and was going to go to my local repcosupacrap with measurements and pick some from the file...

but just to be sure, one weekend soon i will just take one of my shocks out, do the compressed / extended measurement, +50mm to the numbers i get, put them back in, drive to the shop, order the shocks, wait, recieve the shocks, install the shocks...

but someone may have the answer already :)

is there any pics of the finished ride height with the MD springs ? i have OME suspension and yes the front is 40mm lower than the back and bottoms out too easy. i'd prefer a level ride. Cheers, Chris. :deadhorse:

I have been wondering about some of these measurements myself. On the weekend I did some compression and extension measuring.

Now, I have installed bump stops to cater for 32" Simex MP Trekker. I then installed springs that I liked but have not yet replaced shocks.

Measurements as follows...

Current setup
Front
Min 330
Kerb 430
Max 510

Rear
Min 400
Kerb 440
Max 525

Method for measurement...
I got the rear to the bump stop so that was my compressed measurement. I could not get the front to bump stop so I subtracted the space between the stop and spring plate(plus 5mm for rubber compression) at that point.
At full extension, the front spring was loose, so that was my measurement. The rear was still tight so I dropped the bottom shock point and lowered the wheel till that spring was loose.

Does anyone have the kerb measurements of a new standard stock Jimny. Must be new to minimise chance of sag, road wear and extra weight of one's shit in the car. Knowing this will then tell me what 'lift' I have, as I am not really sure.
I am considering KYB shocks but cannot find a listing of these with measurements and valving.
What valving should I be looking for in a Jimny with added weight (roll cage, ARB bar, winch, rear bar, etc etc)
Looking for reasonable handling on road and best articulation off road. The springs I have now are rather stiff and much more stable than the old Kings I had.

Ok, so I have just taken some actual shock measurements (not vehicle) of the stock shocks and the '2" Suzisport lift' shocks.
Stock Shocks
Front
Min 297
Kerb ??? (Never did measurements of this)
Max 345

Rear
Min 345
Kerb ??? (Never did measurements of this)
Max 457

Suzisport 2" lift
Front
Min 305
Max 463

Rear
Min <400 (These are still in the vehicle and I did not do a compression measurement of shock unbolted)
Max 490
