Hey all, having a bit of a brain dead moment and cant think i forgot how to wire up a reverse light on a 3 way switch (rev/off/on) any help would be great

haha yea, on my mates car, might put in a 3 way switch on the inside and one at the reverse light so i can switch it off on him whenever i jump in the car

i think i figured it out

switch pole
1 earth
2 to light earth
3 splice off reverse switch

and the light will have the earth to the switch and positive to power through a fuse

get a cheap HID kit off ebay too its stupid bright and draw heaps less.
only downside is the warm up time. so maybe even LED

for the switch part

you need at least a single pole dual throw switch, it will have 3 terminals on it

the middle terminal will be power to the light if its LED or the relay if its higher wattage

one outer terminal tap into the factory reverse light wiring, so it will have power when ignition is on and in reverse and switched that way

The other outer terminal hook up to either a constant power source (fused) if you want to be able to turn it on at any time or ignition for only when the ignition is on or whatever

its very important that if you are using a high wattage light that this switch only feeds a relay (to pin 86, then pin 85 is earthed) otherwise youll melt the reverse switch and or your toggle switch

Ummm, if you read the question actually he need a three way switch, or a double throw and straight on/off... But what you said plus leave one of the three way options open.

ummm ive read the question and the same question 700 times before, if he is smart enough to wire it up he is smart enough to know his double throw single pole switch is going to need to be a version with an off position

Yeah but if you walk into somewhere like Jaycar and ask for a SPDT switch your not going to get one with an off position. Typically that'll come as a SPTT.

Hey guys thanks for all your inputs. The switches I found had acc/pwr/acc, would that work? i tested it with a test light and found that it wouldnt, am i doing something wrong?

Ive just wired it to an on/off switch for the time being.

Doesn't sound like it. Get one of these:

Obviously jaycar sell them, also supercheap have one thats single pole but otherwise the same (you only need a single pole, but the double pole is fine to.)

Then just wire it up how royce said.
