guys,

Popped my head under my bonnet today just to give every thing a quick check before my camping trip tomorrow and noticed this:




There is a hole in my over bottle and it's all De-formed from the heat to. I know the extractor's have caused this obsessively...but What i do want to know is if any one else has seen this happen before ?

I don't know why it's happen just now, even tho i put the extractor's on over a year ago .

So i will make a heat shield up for it next week once i get a new one and other jimny owner's with extractor's, take this as a warning an just keep a eye on your over bottle and maybe make a heat shield up, so this won't happen to you

you could also wrap the extractors in that posh heat proof stuff found on ricers

some on this stuff on the a/c lines will do the trick, it's a shit of a job trying to wrap headers on the car neatly. but realistically if you can move them so they hug the inner guard a bit more they'll be fine.... cable ties.

the overflow bottle will need a heat shield of some sort, you'd be surprised how effective even large dog food tin could be, cut the top & bottom out & flatten it out, then shape it. that or word on the street is your everyday road signs are a great source of alloy sheet, i hear the sticker stuff is really hard to remove.

make a heat shield shaped to the extractors with some spacers that attach with hose clamps to the extractors =)

I used a dog food can, to protect my transfer case mount from exhaust heat.
It would break every 5 minutes,
but after the tin plate buffer, it lasted forever

I'm gonna make a heat shield soon but I wasnt sure on how to mount it...

Oh and without trying to hijack your thread monkey... What does everyone think about a bonnet scoop to keep things a bit cooler and add a little wank factor

On modern cars aerodynamics is very important.
If you change the air flow to radiator/motor it could be worse not better.
Was a good solution on older cars,
but in modern cars, do a bit of research,
to make sure you do actually make things better.

Fair enough... Never thought it would cause dramas lol

Even with the heat shroud on my old extractors, a bit of a wheel up the beach and it got hot enough that the pole to hold the bonnet up burns your fingers lol
I was just lookin at cooling it down a little bit.

There are vents you can buy from Auto shops, that sit flush into bonnet.
Less obtrusive to eyes you don't want seeing.

i think those are illegal - from memory you cant have vents facing the windscreen in case fluids come out of the engine bay onto it...

doing a tape wrap on the pipes would do a pretty good job on its own, add a heat shield again and you'd be laughing i reckon.

You can't even have them facing forward unless it is factory..

Something about in the event of a accident (running someone down) they could stick a limb in and take it off...

Also you are cutting up the bonnet and structually weakening it. (Won't crumble proberly in a smash too)

Subaru are covered under insurance and will cover you if you dismember anyone with your scoop... (So I have heard)

Well i got a new over bottle on Saturday arvo...got suzistore to leave one out the front for ...$25 for another one !!! I was going to move the bottle forwards a bit, but room is a bit to tight...so i will just make up a heat shield for it...

I drove 30km in mine with no shield and melted the coating off my dual battery tray thats been there for 6 years so they must work a bit

try and make a shield that is 2 thinner sheets with an air gap in between, it will insulate better

Or Acl make a heat shield material you can cut and shape to size, seen it in Supercheap before

I will try roll the 2 shield's into the same shape as the bottle to help reflect the heat better to.

^^ especially the paint on the bonnet... my bonnet's clear coat only started going after the 1.6 with extractors was put in, the clear started going directly above the pipes then spread over the whole bonnet.

haha sierra bottles do that... they jump off the mount on the rad and fall through the big gap underneath =) i nearly lost one years back in the middle of the sand dunes, luckily a mate was driving behind me and saw it!

wrapping the extractors in exhaust wrap will shorten the life of your extractors. i would stick to making a shield. as for the over flow bottle mine fell of this arvo when i went to put the lid back on =)

i replaced mine with a new one and its not fallen off since. it was rather a tight fit to get on which was assuring.
