My partner has had her Prestige Grand Vitara 08 for a while now.. and her brakes are squeaking when she presses down on the brake peddal whilst driving.. we have replaced the Brake pads with new ones and got the disks machined and they still squeal..

saying this.. When she was looking to buy a GV, she test drove another one which the brakes also squealed on them when applied..

Is there something I am missing here?? can anyone tell me any other possibilties why the brakes would still squeak??

Is it a know problem in the Grand Vitaras??

What brand pads?

Is the rubber (it is on mine) or metal anti-rattle/squeal shim still there. It sits in between the pad and caliper.

Do you use the brake caliper lube stuff?

May just be a common trait of the car. Big brakes squeal no matter what you do to them. If the brakes are in good condition and they work ok then i wouldn't worry too much about it unless the noise bothers you too much.

You can use a small amount of copper grease in between the back of the pad and the shim to try and reduce the noise.

DO NOT GET GREASE ON THE BRAKE PAD SURFACE
(only to ensure no one gets hurt)

My 01, and my mothers 03 GV do the same thing... mine doesnt do it all the time, but i found a good, fairly heavy push on the brake pedal from speed, seems to stop them squealing for a while, may just be a build up of brake dust... brake pads with a softer compound could be better, but wont last as long... i have ferodo fitted to mine, and my mothers are stock ones, lol... so who knows, it doesnt bother me enough to worry about it...

what brand brake pad are they?
if its bendix bin them in my opinion

use either suzuki or QFM standard replacements

My Bendix 4WD pads don't squeal at all.

not the suzuki brand.. possibly bendix.. the suzuki ones squealed so we changed them to the generic brand and still squeal.. as for the shim can't memba will have to check.. brake lube stuff??

It's the partners car.. The sound of the squeal isn't as bad as listening to her complain about it.. might try the copper grease if nothing else works..

very true. I might try the ferodo ones next time as I got a set in my sillycar..

hmmm they could be made using different materials to road brake pads?
im just speaking from experience as i had them on my swift and hated them and on my step dads forester and they both squeel but suzuki ones didnt and the ones iv got now dont.... interesting

Check the rear drums, the tend to hold dust and dirt and all other manner of crap.

My 08 also squels, but it's the rear drums and only occasionally. My 03 GV also had squelly rear drums and a simple clean out with a compressor fixed it.

+1. Even general brake dust (ie no mud etc) causes lots of squealing in my drums.
