i'm trying to get take the axels out of my drover and the fronts came out really easy but i can't get the back ones out
i took the drum off and unbolted the backing plate but the axel its self doesn't want to budge
is it alright to use an excessive amount of force to remove the axels?
also the diff has a welded centre but i don't know if that makes any difference

it will need a decent amount of force. Dont be shy

welded centre wont make a difference. if you bolt the drum on backwards with a few threads you can use it like a slide hammer

i got a slide hammer and used that a bit and it didn't seem to move
can the axel come out without unbolting the backing plate?

the backing plate holds the bearing in, and the bearing is either bashed or pressed on. If your backing plate is undone the slide hammer should take care of it.

they can be a little bit stubborn sometimes!

haha a little stubborn? i thought somehow the guy i bought it off welded the centre to axel

it is a lot easier if you use the slide hammer on the bracket thing
that is on the axle. if the pulling force is in the middle of the axel, rather then around the edge they pop out a lot easier.

i use an old holden drive shaft and put a chain through the eyes of that and then around the axle
that does the job

i have tried everything to remove these axels but they haven't budged at all does anyone else have any suggestions?

knock some wheel studs out, stick some really long botls in there and bolt the wheel on so you can pull it about 100mm like a big slide hammer then reef on it

it will either pop or the car will fall on you and kill you, never fails though

as already mentioned, ive always bolted the drum on backwards, then with the inch or so of freeplay you get, just give it to her!! Might take a few go's.. but has always worked!

No, you have to un-bolt backing plate.

the only problem i have is the diff isn't a car so i don't have the weight of the car to hold it

Get a proper slide hammer from somewhere. If it is that stuck with the backing plate unbolted, it's the only way it will come out.

i had to take axles out of a diff that wasn't in the car, i tied it to a tree then put a piece of wood between the backing plate and the drive flange and beat the hell out of it.

it was very stuck, but it came out eventually.

did you hit the piece of wood or the backing plate?

the backing plate mate. bent it a little but straightened it once the bearing was off.
