Fitting new tyres on GV steel rims - and the tyre guy reckons that one of my rims is buckled.
Only way they could tell was when balancing the tyres - needed 200g of weights to get it to balance.
Is it possible the tyre itself is that far off balance? As the rim 'looks' to be fine
edit - new tyres are KM2's in 225/75/16

They would of mentioned ( if they had a brain ) seeing it wobble, lot's of mud tyre's need lot's of weight...

Get them to spin the rim up without the tyre on it and watch for warp. I have a Steel rim here that is buckled that badly the machine comes up with ERROR but t the eye it's hard to tell. Most probly come off a car thats been rear ended.

I dropped off the rims this morning before work, and i'm going there tomorrow morning.
Just had a quick chat on the phone with them today, so i'll ask them to spin the rim without the tyre, and maybe even swap that tyre with one of the other ones. Should be able to tell if it's the tyre or the rim then.
If it is the tyre, 200g still sounds like alot. I know muddies are harder to balance but they wouldn't be that much off would they?

A tyre of that size shouldnt shouldnt need anymore than 100g. If the tyre is that bad then i'd ask for another.
If they have trouble balancing it up make them turn the tyre so the yellow dot on the tyre is in line with the valve stem on the rim. this is so the balance points match up.

KM2's are pretty bad for balancing, 1 of the 6 i have here (to durnk to pull the rest down to have a look what's on them) has 120g on it and Alien has a few weights on his too

Turns out the rim is definately buckled. Not happy. 
On the machine you can clearly see the rim wobble left/right a good 5mm.
The 3 other tyres took about 60-70g to balance.
I bought 4 rims off ebay and painted them up. Now i have to paint up my spare and use that instead. Will leave the buckled one sitting on the back door.

Gv wheel's in Melbourne Prick! This bloke bought these of me really cheap and is know on this site. They are not in good condition and the tyers are shagged, and one of the rims is bent! All he has done is painted them. If you are buying them please look at them first!

Yep i guess thats them!
even knowing that the rim is bent - you still can't tell till its on the machine. The tyre sits properly on the rim, and its prefectly round. Where the wheel nuts go must be slightly off, but i cant see where.
oh also i got them very cheap! made an offer off ebay.
Whats a little wierd is that it turned out to be this guy. It hit the news just a few days after i picked them up. I'm still half expecting a call from the police

Most new tyres these days have balance spots on them to assist in reducing the weights required to balance a wheel, but most tyre fitters can't be arsed taking the time and just whack on heaps of weights and hope to get a near-enough balance. I've had one wheel where the fitter had put nearly 220g of weights around one side, and when I pointed out the dots on the tyre and requested he re-fit the tyre, the balance weights reduced to 10g!! He had no idea about them.
The YELLOW dot on a tyre is the lightest part of the tyre and should be placed nearest the valve stem.
The RED dot is the highest point of the tyre (in an out-of-round sense), and if the rims are marked with a WHITE dot (Signifying low point), the red and White should be nearest to each other.
Obviously, in most cases it will be impossible to have both the Yellow dot near the valve AND the Red dot near the White on the rim, and it is usually best to go for remedying out-of-round (red to white) and then add the amounts of weights required for balance, but some brands of rims don't feature the White dot mark and you go with Yellow to valve for best balance.. Sometimes too, with even the best matching, a rim and wheel combination will still require a lot of weights for a balance.
And sometimes your rim could be buckled too!
