Does anybody know if there are any 15" X 7" rims with a shallow enough drop-centre to clear the brake calipers on a '98 grand vitara?

So I am assuming you want to go to 15" to have a larger range of tyres? From my knowage there is no 15"rim that will fit. The prob is with the front brake calipar. If you try to fit sunnies rims or F100 rims the front brakes hit. I just stayed with 16" rims and ran 235x75x16. Had spring lift and spacers.

Not the range really. I just wanted to be able to go to a much taller tyre without going to a larger overall circumference. They are heaps better on sand when deflated that low profile tyres.
The 'drop-centre' of the rim is the problem, so I was wondering if anyone had found a rim with a shallow drop-centre.

I just read my book and found the recommended speed rating is "H" which is 240KM/hr which is bloody stupid. The car would never do anywhere near that speed. It makes tyres VERY expensive.

By the way, I PM'd you about spacers, but have not heard back yet.

you wont really have a problem on sand, GV's arent heavy like cruisers and stuff, 15" rim is only going to net you another 13mm of sidewall for a given circumference, not going to make much difference

the problem isnt in the rim, they have to be that shape to physically fit the tyre, unless you find some split rims to really stuff the feel of it..

GV has a very different rotor offset to Vitaras, the rotor is a lot shallower so the caliper is a lot further out than on a Vitara, have discussed fitting a complete Vitara wagon hub and brakes on a GV as they are similar sized but its just not worth the effort for an " smaller rim.

FWIW in most states you can legally fit a lower speed rated tyre as long as you have a sticker on the dash advising of this

PhillT, I have tried it all. I have a 99 GV, I have searched here and aboard and have not found anything. I even went to Dagways, Mullins and Ajax to see if they could make me some wheels, No Go. So I have stuck with the genuine GV steelies. The only other option that you have is to import the entire front assembaly from a 98-04 Chevy Tracker as this has a 15" set up with the same body as the GV but I looked at it and the cost was just to high, eg: $1000 per side. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it just ain't going to happen.

Did you happen to come across any 16 X 8 inch mags with -5 offset?
My stock mags are +5 offset so I can go 10mm outwards and maybe fit 255 or 265s

I didn't look for 16 x 8's but depending on what mods you have done and how keen you are, I have 31"x 11.5" on mine with the stock steelies (+5) but I also have a 2" body Lift and a 2" suspension lift and I have also done a fair amount of cutting and it still rubs on full lock and on full flex. But I agree that somewhere between 0 & -5 would be perfect. I have only just finished all my research and there is a fair amount available in a 16" tyre now but yes, you do pay through the nose for them. I did also find that prices vary up to $50 per tyre from one place to the next.

being a 2 door 1.6 could have smaller brakes.

I have been on the phone to a few wheel suppliers and a couple of manufacturers and it seems that there is nothing in 16 X 8 with -5mm 139.7 5 stud. I do not want to get into cutting & bending, but I am going to do 2" susp. lift.
SGIO will only cover up to 50mm. total lift, so that is the limit for me.
I'll probably put air shocks on the back so I can pump it up for loads & towing.
How much do the 31s effect the gearing? Are 11.5 legal on 7" rims?
I would be pretty happy if I could get 30 X 9.5s on there with a 2" lift and have no rubbing problems.
