Hi all,
My Baleno motor was overheating a while ago, Long story short. Another motor is in its place.
Now, I have the original sierra fan on the motor. I have a plastic top sierra radiator. And i want to run a thermo fan infront of the radiator.
The stock Baleno ecu has a wire for its original thermo. Would this wire be a switching power wire for a relay? Or would it be straight power for a themo fan??
I still have to find out which way the sierra fan blows/sucks too to suit the thermo..
The thermo should kick in when the ecu thinks she's too hot correct?
Any help is a thankyou!

what about using one of those kits that has a sensor that goes into the top radiator hose and turns on the fan at a preset temperature

I would think it earths out to switch a relay but easy way is to check with a meter
fan pulls air from the front
thought about a vit fan and radiator? thermos suck on sierras

I guess to get a answer to your question you will need to go through the vitara wiring guide and work out how they did it As royce said though you really need a multimeter and work out the voltage on this pin when the motor is cold and when it gets hot etc etc. I did a little search on this to see if I could find some good info for you with little luck but i did come across somewhere that when the A/C is on, in some cars the thermo fan comes on regardless of temperature - not sure if this is applicable here though.
As Mike pointed out using a kit would probably be the simplest depending how good you are with electrics. A quick search on ebay I found a Craig Davies one but at $75 and seeing how us Sierra owners a tight in the $ area I would look at using the ecu pin as you have suggested. It should be fine. I would go through a relay though and not directly connected - using a relay too should make it possible to have an override switch which would come in handy too.
Others maybe able to confirm but if I was to drive a relay off the ecu I would put a diode (reverse polarity) across the coil terminals on the relay to stop the collapsing magnetic field from inducing a voltage spike back to the ecu: Relays so another thing to consider.
Also I thought with DC motor if you wanted a motor to blow or suck you just changed the polarity?

on the blow os suck part, you swap the polarity and turn the blade around, but they are designed for this as well
they A/C thing could be interesting as some ECU will also increase the engine speed when the compressor and fan are running, you could connect an idle up switch for that

vitara clutch fan on the 1.6 will fit with the stock 1.3 shroud and rad.
fail to see how a thermo could ever do a better job than a good fan and shroud, glad to be proven wrong though.

we put a 350mm thurmo into alex's zook and it still works ok no heating prob yet. just rember to turn the blades around

A- i think thermo's are shite on a 4x4 but if they have to be used i've allways been doing this system, it eliminates that cheap nasty aftermarket mechano type probe shite....i think thats the technical name. it comprises a swift thermostat housing, swift fan switch and an adaptor to suit the particular manifold it is being used with. the benefits of this system is that A its japanese and reliable and B looks factory.

what thread is the switch and would it fit into one of the vacuum switch holes?

I was thinking front one under thermostat, which is probably same thread anyway

it might be, some manifolds have this others don't.

Just some pics on my water system:
1st too are the thermostat housing, top and under.. The temp sensor is as close as i could get it to the head, so its a reliable source.
The Thermo fan will not be the main fan!
The stocko sierra fan will be doing the most of it. Its only if the Baleno ecu doesnt like the temp, eg. Hot day, 4wding, tough conditions, That it will be kicking in as a backup.
I dont know where the fan sits on a sierra as i forget where. But mine sits alittle offset to the radiator. The top 1/2 of shroud sits fine with it, i should find another bottom 1/2....
Also, do you think that some kind of heat sheild should be made for the heat coming from the extractors for my water pipe?

so i take it you have the stock sierra radiator?. you might find that wit two fans it might not improve all that much during very hard work, more so on hot days. the boys have tried these setups with varying success, but usually isn't the most reliable. for that particular engine i would definately use a vit radiator, as for us in heavy load conditions have proven a winner time and time again. best results are from a large surface area, and a thin core, not these two dozen core jobs you see for sale. the beauty of a very thin core is the air passes through quickly and, therefore taking the heat out quickly. see how you go but if that still doesn't do the job as you would hope bite the bullett and fit a vit one.

Sorry!!!
The radiator in that pic is the one that blew in the first place causing overheating.. Rusted out on the top outlet...Otherwise, the radiator was awesome! Excellent in all conditions.
Anyway, Mine now is sierra plastic top, Alloy thin fins..
Have you ever installed a vit rad with the bigger vit power steering joeblow?
(this is starting to link on what i have asked about 2weeks ago)

I guess not....
Anyway, went and got 2 thermo fans today, one to suck, and one to pull.
I will put the suck one on the front to see if it acheives anything..
Need to work it out via relay etc..Will be using the original baleno relays with the ecu etc.
