My mate is throwing around some ideas for his car using hydralic rams along side his shocks to push the axle out and in.

Things I have thought about are:
An exhaust solenoid to completly open the rams during normal driving conditions. If the rams are open will there be any damage done to them by the normal up and down of the axle unit?

when they are being used obviously there will be no suspension travel and any big hits will put stress on any mounts so this will need to be adressed in design and driving style.

ram mounting position so they dont extend or compress to the stops before the suspension does.

All components can be made/ bought for free or minimal amount so from a muck around project point of view what else can anyone think of a con/pro.

i was thinking about this the other day. i wouldn't set them up joined to the diff but as the bump stops so you could pump them up when needed. then its just the normal suspension working till you use them off road.

make em passive by linking each side front to rear so when one goes up it pushes the other down, no bodyroll either

i have a air ram on my bike for ultra quick, full throttle
gear shifts. cant think of any other places to use one.

I know a suzuki with 3 of em to operate high and low, front and rear drive on the transfer

I took the following video just recently when I went out with Glen Dobbin and freinds to watch him testing the new tube buggy he just built. It has no coils or shocks, Everything is hydraulic.

That is some cool stuff. very neat. any specs?

Glen custom manufactured everything pretty much himself including all the hydraulic cylinders. I can tell you though it's got a gen 3 motor with a dry sump and I'm pretty sure it was an extremely modified c4 Ford box that somehow sits on the side of the engine and not behind, and the hydraulic oil pump runs off the tranny too from memory

glens rig looks good crawling, it will be interesting to actually see it having to DRIVE something!! This is what usually separates the better rigs, full throttle climbs and hard launches!.

As for pneumatics, Tim has them on his green 4runner (steve competed against him at PROTRUCK). they work well, but hydraulic is better. similar to ours
