I think there's lots of good tech in this thread, however, there's some key points:

You can't overcool an auto in Australia.

A larger cooler is required if you aren't using the in-radiator cooler. Liquid-liquid coolers are very efficient, air-liquid far less so. If you are worried about the in-radiator cooler, take this into account.

It's normally possible to fit a cooler that's VERY large- I think Greg's is nearly 300mm square.

A trans cooler doesn't have to go anywhere near the radiator - get one of these:

and put it wherever you like.

There's a tread about this ATM on Pirate 4X4.

It appears the worst side effect from "overcooling" is that water might condense out of the fluid and freeze in the auto.

Not a problem me thinks in Australia, but it was reported as an issue for guys in the northern US/Canada in winter (night time temps of -40?C ) Even then, there was no damage, only funny shifting until it warmed up.

Apparently though, autos are "optimised" to run at about 75?C

I'd suggest in Australia it would bad hard to cool an auto well enough that it ran much below that most of the time.

It might drop below that after a long down hill, but it wouldn't be for long.

With the refitting of air con condenser, and fitting of new cooler,
it became evident that the engine fan was not having much cooling effect,
on the new cooler.
Cooler was too far from it to get much air pulled through.
It was running hot at slow speeds/idling. Not good for crawling.
So until I can afford a dedicated fan for the trans cooler,
I have replumbed the original radiator cooler, in series with new cooler.

Running extremely better/ more stable temps now.

Soft. Welcome to less pedals, much less confusing.

In this cooler weather have not needed the extra cooling fan switched on.
Even crawling up hills with trailer on, it dont get too hot.
But in Summer I needed it a fair bit.
I won't be plumbing the stock cooler back in.
