Washing the mud off last night and found this big dent in the fuel tank after the weekends run.

Had about a quarter of a tank in today and my wife driving back from the shops ran out of fuel on the highway and not in a good spot. Remaining fuel couldnt be picked up due to the dent.

Now rather than filling up everytime i get to half a tank, i searched through the forum and came across this thread which describes using compressed air.

Keen to give this a go on the weekend but do you think the dent is too big for this method. Fuel tank guard might be coming from Santa

could this be the reason petrol poured out when you got a bit angled in the bog hole??? i reckon it happened going up that hill.

Mine is a bit more rooted than that one and i now have the same problem!

yeah worldo i reckon thats where it happened. also done this on the tree when going around the bog hole!!

WHat i've found with the fucked up tank is i dont hit it anymore

Compressed air is very effective. If you over do it, just tap the bulges down flat.

Just keep an eye on the tank once you've popped it out, especially for any ridges or creases. I had two tiny dings in my last tank that were only say 10mm deep each and maybe 100mm diameter, but when we went to Karijini NP and did a couple of hundred kays on rough corrugations, the ridge between the two creases ended up cracking through. Had to replace the tank.

how does this work? put the air gun nozzle in the tank with a rag around the gun?

That might work.

When I did one, I removed the tank first - it was holed and required welding as well as popping out.

I would disconnect the tank from the rest of the car to avoid pushing compressed air through the rest of the fuel system.

Suzuki locking cap's like to leak out the key hole on nice angle's to.....

i dunno if the same principle can be applied due to the breathers and shit! but when i dent my jerries i just fill them right up and leave them in the sun on a hot day! the fuel expands and pushes them out

dont think this would work, unless ur tank is on the roof or externaly mounted......or if ur car is upside down for any reason??

haha i had that happen the other week, interestingly the lock works smoother now, so i'm going to claim that i intentionally lubed the lock.

i've got some mean dents in my tank but they dont seem to affect the fuel pickup, however i try to fill up at 220km or so, as i know at that point ill have used 30L at the worst (usually more like 25L).

hey mate, that sounds awesome. only i have my bucks party this W/E (going to the goldy, dreamworld followed by as many strip bars we can get to!)
