hey guys brought a mk1 gti reecently havin a lil trobble with it..
start it up and its fine runs well but very rich as u increase the revs to 2000rpm the engine cuts out till 1800rpm then kicks back in till 2000rpm like its on a limiter if u increase the throttle further it clears up and runs fine again(but still rich) im thinking MAF sensor or TPS? also if i rev the engine hard like 5.5k~6krpm and relese the throttle it back fires a bit maby due to the overfueling? after i shut the engine off it ran on for a bit i didnt think that was possible in a EFI??

if any ony has any ideas would be grate
p.s engine is still in a swift till i get it running right

Do you have a check light on? It should come on with the igntion and go off after the engine starts.

The GTi ECU has a limp home mode that does something similar to what you're describing - runs rich and with retarded timing but I think it cuts at 3000 rpm rather than the 2000 you mention.

Dodgy O2 sensor? Is it a hot wire MAF? You're not supposed to but I used to clean an RB30 MAF with an aerosol gun bore cleaner with good results.

that's hunting. tps is out. or dirty afm.

mk1 don't run a o2 sencer and don't have limp home.

Since it's still in the car check the codes throught the computer and read the flashes

As jonno said MK1 don't have an O2 sensor but i would bet that your throttle stop is out of wack and also you TPS and AFM may need to be adjusted.
It's not a hard job to do just need some filler guages and a multi meter

Another problem could be your CSV (cold start valve) if it's not blocked off

ok so the car is at my dads atm im towing it to mine 2moro ill check for codes first up may point me in the right direction. with or without codes ill ajust the TPS and timing i also got the schumatic and specifications for the AFM so ill hook up to the multimeter while im there and check the sensor. il leave cleaning the AFM till last if all the above fails as i dont want to cause myself more drama. oh about the o2 sensor what is the wire/sensor coming out of the exhaust manafold?

ill update use 2moro on how its goin hopefully fixs it so i can get on with the conversion :D

Some do have an O2 sensor, it depends what market the car was built for. If it doesn't have an O2 then there should be an AFR adjuster under the dash.

hey i got it to my house iv just put in a fuse and checked the codes 22 is loged TPS fault i reset the TPS ajustment and checked a few things got some funny readings TPS connector terminals B-C=400~600ohms @ idle i got 744ohms. B-C= 3.5~6.5kohms @ WOT it went OL. C-D=0ohms @ idle was 0.00. C-D= OL @ WOT it was OL.A-C=3.5~6.5kohms i had 6.86. the specs are close but not within parameter so i think i shoud change it. is misfiring every now and than but its not rich or backfiring ne more or cuting out @ 2000 rpm the code is still in the ecm will the code clear itself once i fix the issue?

Yeah....you should change it to be within parameters

Could be wrong but i belive that's a MK2 or a MK3 engine and not MK1 (thats the reason you have the wire coming from the extractors as MK2/3 have an O2 sensor)

For a MK1 your AFM/throttle body should be on your intake manifold and not on the actual pipe just after your pod filter

Also check your leads

To reset your codes just unplug the negative from the battery and leave it off for a minute or so

the code issues I have fixed, as soon as I replaced the issue item the code go's away. however a new tps won't cost much, just grab one off redline.

its an sf type 1 , the first of the sf series of gti (89-92).. the mk1 mk2 , mk3 designations were bought about by internet forums , suzuki and parts suppliers dont recognise these designations . they are actually , sa gti (86-88) , sf type 1 (89-92) and sf type 2 (92-99)

and yes thats an ignition module under the coil to the right in the pic.

also the tps may not be faulty , you may need to calibrate it . someone may of adjusted what looks like an "idle screw" on the throttle body. this is not an idle screw , it is a throttle stop screw to stop the butterfly from closing fully in the throttle body and jamming the butterfly . if someone has tampered with this , this will cause the tps to throw an error code . gti's actually have an "air bleed" screw on top of the throttle body for adjusting idle speed , which should be adjusted with the diagnostic port bridged ..

done a bit more research into my engine found it is a mk2 pulled the dash out of it today tryin to work what i need and what is rubbish got some wire schumatics on 89 gti har to read tho small print and on 4 pages so im tryn to conect the lines lol seem to be about as accurate as a blind archer as i know my MAF sensor dont hook up to my L.H.R indicator  as far as i know you have to merge both gti and sierra looms if any one has any info on this would help alot not sure what i have to keep on the sierra side of the wiring. the old g13 carby engine has a loom but all looks like shit for cold start and vacume solenoids what do i keep? :?
